Schuylkill County pastor discusses local Black Lives Matter movement

PINE GROVE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) — People are protesting around the globe for the Black Lives Matter movement and now, a Schuylkill County pastor is taking a slightly different approach to share his stance. 

Driving along Route 501 in Pine Grove, you don’t normally see people standing along the side of the road, but Wednesday morning there was a handful share a clear message to those driving by.

Former FCI Schuylkill correctional officer charged in bribe scheme

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A former BOP Correctional Officer at FCI Schuylkill, has been charged with bribery and corruption.

According to United States Attorney David J. Freed, Paul Taylor allegedly smuggled tobacco into FCI Schuylkill for prisoners in exchange for money between 2011 and 2016 while he was a correctional officer.

The investigation was conducted by special agents of the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd K. Hinkley.

Schuylkill County Fair canceled for 2020

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The president of the Schuylkill County Fair, Paul T. Kennedy, announced Wednesday that the annual Schuylkill County Fair has been canceled for 2020.

In a release sent out, Kennedy says the decision was made due to uncertainty regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and the reopening of the state.

Schuylkill County fire company seeks missing radio

WAYNE TOWNSHIP, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local fire company is searching for a radio.

The Friedensburg Fire Company lost a yellow Motorola radio with Friedensburg Fire Company stickers on it worth $4,500 in the area of Swartz Valley Road and Luckenbill Road in Wayne Township sometime between June 5th and June 7th.

The radio was last seen on the ground just off the road. When members of the department went to look for the radio, it was gone.

The radio has since been turned on twice and the emergency button was activated once but immediately turned off.

Local police staring down further cuts

McADOO, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Schuylkill County borough is facing financial trouble. As a way to save money, they are cutting police hours, again.

Eyewitness News brought you the story of the first round of cuts just a month ago. Now the cuts continue.

“How many more hours are you going to cut? I mean, is it a ploy to get rid of the police department?” Claire Perputnik of McAdoo said.

Man in custody after crashing U-Haul in Schuylkill County creek

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man driving a U-Haul is in custody after leading police on a chase Tuesday morning.

According to court paperwork, Vincent Davalos faces several charges. According to police, the pursuit began in the Frackville area and into Butler Township. Davalos drove the U-Haul past barriers that were blocking Walnick Drive in Butler Township where the road had washed out due to flooding.

Helping to fight addiction in Schuylkill County

TAMAQUA, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Tamaqua Police Department teamed up with the state attorney general’s office Monday to help people struggling with addiction.

They gave away Narcan and other resources to help prevent overdoses outside the Tamaqua Area School District administration building from 1 to 3 p.m. The crew had about 150 bags for anyone to take.

Tamaqua community pool set to reopen in June

TAMAQUA, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) — As we approach summer, many are looking for ways to cool down while staying safe amid the coronavirus pandemic. Tamaqua residents can now look forward to heading back to the community pool.

Workers are skimming the water, preparing the Howard D. Buehler Memorial pool to reopen.

“A little bit nervous but I am very excited that we are going to get our, our town people inside the pool,” Beth Fritzinger-Jones, Tamaqua Community Pool Manager told Eyewitness News.

Letting the good times roll at Roller Roost in Pottsville

POTTSVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A beloved roller rink in Schuylkill County is making a comeback after the original owner decided to close the doors and sell the property.

Roller Roost Sports Arena in Pottsville may not have reopened yet, but the new owner’s kids love to skate around in there.

“It’s fun and you can learn a lot of tricks on it,” McKinley Hoover said.

“They fell in love with the place. Couldn’t get them to leave after five years of skating,” owner Becky Hoover said.
