House fire shakes up neighborhood in Luzerne County

EXETER, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local family finds themselves out of their home this Easter weekend.

Fire chased them from their house after flames sparked Saturday morning in Luzerne County.

28/22 News spoke with a neighbor who lives next door to the house that caught on fire and she says she could not believe what she was seeing.

A house on Wilson Street went up in flames early Saturday morning. A neighbor who did not want to appear on camera says this rocked the neighborhood.

A neighbor who lives next door did speak to 28/22 News about the commotion first thing in the morning.

"My husband about 7:20 this morning saw the reflections from the firetrucks and police cars in the window and got up. We saw smoke and he said I think the neighbor's house is on fire. We saw smoke before and thought nothing of it but we came to the back window and yes, it was on fire," explained Carol Gallup from Exeter.

It did not take long for the fire to escalate.

"by the time I came out here, it was nothing but black smoke you couldn't even see like right in front of you cannot see anything," said Gallup.

Gallup says the firefighters worked quickly and once they were aware two children were unaccounted for, they went back in.

"And then before I knew the firefighters were up on the roof cutting through the roof and spraying and then I was concerned because there are two little children that live there too, and I hadn't seen anybody," stated Gallup.

Gallup feared for the children's safety, but her fears eased as word spread throughout the tight-knit neighborhood.

"From what I understand they're all out and they're all ok. two of them did go to the hospital and that was about it, but it was chaotic," added Gallup.

She says it's been quite the morning and she just hopes everyone is ok.

"It's scary and I feel bad for the people. they're good people and they have a lot going on right now and I hope things work out for them," continued Gallup.

Gallup says she knew the kids would be all right when she found out one of them asked if their Xbox was going to be okay.

Officials say eight were displaced and two were sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the fire was ruled undetermined, officials add.
