Sinkhole opens up in Swoyersville

SWOYERSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — In another part of Luzerne County, a sinkhole opened up in a backyard in Swoyersville, Monday afternoon.

Crews on the scene tell 28/22 News the hole is about 12 feet in diameter and is about 15 feet deep.

Firefighters got a call that the ground was opening up on Hill Street near Hughes Street just after 1:00 p.m. Monday.

The Swoyersville Borough Maintenance Department is currently on the scene monitoring the situation. Officials say the plan is to fill it with stone and monitor it for a few days.

There have already been three tri-axel truckloads of stone brought in.

If the stones don't sink, authorities say topsoil will be added.

"The further back, the better, you know. We're gonna start hauling in stone go from there and hopefully get it filled by the time it's dark," said Dave Hampton with the Swoyersville Street Department.

28/22 News hasn't confirmed what the cause is at this time or that it's directly related to the Toby Creek sinkhole, but the maintenance crew on the scene believes that it's a possibility.
