WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Information was released on a heavy police presence that left one dead and impacted a Wilkes-Barre community Sunday afternoon.
The Wilkes-Barre Police Chief Joseph Coffay and District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce released details about the heavy police presence in the area of Barney and Horton Streets in Wilkes-Barre.
Police say in the late hours of Saturday evening, Wilkes-Barre City Police got a report of a physical and sexual assault victim at a nearby hospital.
During their investigation, police say they tried to perform a search warrant on Sunday at a home on Barney and Richard Street.
As officers tried to enter the home, a gunman inside opened fire on the police, authorities say. Fortunately, no officers were struck or injured, and they surrounded and secured the home.
The public was cautioned to stay out of the area due to a police operation.
After an hour-long standoff, officials say police entered the home and found the gunman dead in "an apparent suicide."

Police reported that the identity of the victim of the reported physical and sexual assault is not being released due to the nature of the offenses.
Meanwhile, the identity of the gunman is being withheld as authorities work to notify their next of kin.
Chief Coffay and DA Sanguedolce thanked PSP for the resources they put into the incident and their help in multiple attempts to resolve the issue peacefully.
