WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Back to school can be expensive, but on Sunday in Wilkes-Barre, families got help to make sure kids head back confident.
Big Brothers Big Sisters hosted its first Back To School Low Cost Haircuts and Updos event at R-8 Studio on West Market Street.
Stylists from Bellos Hair Salon and Beautiful Intentions cut hair all day, offering low-cost styles for kids. Free, clear bookbags, supplies, and even self-care kits were distributed.
The organizer says the goal is to bring events like she grew up with in New York to our area, as well as give children a boost on their big day back.

"So I wanted to give something that is more connected to what I was brought up with and just giving back to our youth and giving them the opportunity to feel good about themselves and being confident for their first day of back to school," Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern Pennsylvania Program Director Carletta Campbell told 28/22 News.
"I've come across so many families and children, and I love the children, you know, we have a great relationship growing, so it's just nice to show up for them and share that energy with them," Beautiful Intentions Salon Hair Stylist Jalena Mack said.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern Pennsylvania serves 17 counties.
The organizer says next year they will be back, even better than before.
