Man identified after deadly rollover crash in Luzerne County

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Luzerne County Coroner has identified the man who passed away after a vehicle rollover Sunday morning in Luzerne County.

According to Hazle Township Fire Chief Scott Kostician, Hazle Township Fire & Rescue and Lehigh Valley EMS were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover at 9:51 a.m. on Lattimer and Quality Roads in Hazle Township.

Luzerne County Coroner Dion Fernandes told 28/22 News the crash happened because of a medical event, and the car went up onto its side.

Officials say two people were trapped within the car.

Coroner Fernandes explained that the driver was 87-year-old James Watkins from West Hazleton, and his wife was also in the car at the time of the crash.

Authorities say Watkins was unresponsive, and his wife was found conscious.

Fire Chief Kostician told 28/22 News both were successfully removed from the vehicle after a 15-minute effort from crews. Officials say the driver died in the crash. The cause of death is still unknown at this time.

Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, and his wife was injured, according to Coroner Fernandes.

The road was temporarily closed during the accident, but was opened within an hour and a half.

PSP Hazleton is still investigating what caused this deadly crash.
