'White spots' found by custodians at local school ahead of first day

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An elementary school in Luzerne County set to open this week could face different arrangements for a small group of students, faculty, and staff.

Wilkes-Barre Area School District is expected to start school this Thursday.

28/22 News was told custodians discovered white spots on the carpets inside Kistler Elementary while moving furniture.

However, the school's principal tells us custodians found white spots in two classrooms.

Wilkes-Barre School District's administration is having the spots tested for mold and should have the results on Wednesday.

Damage Control Inc. was at the school on Tuesday for additional deep cleaning in the rooms affected.

The principal at the school wants teachers, faculty, and parents to know the district is staying ahead of the situation with the school year starting in two days.

"We want to ensure to all the parents and families that school will be open. We are making sure that out bases are covered. We are being proactive in ensuring safety and security for our families and our staff as well," stated Corey Brenner, principal, Kistler Elementary School.

Brenner tells 28/22 News it was important for the school district to take action before the school year starts.

"I have two little children. Ultimately, we want to make sure that everyone is safe and secure, no matter what going to school. Regardless of what's going on, it is supposed to be a safe place. So we want to make sure not only our students, but also our staff as well," voiced Brenner.

The principal at Kistler Elementary says if parents have children in this school, they will be notified through the school's messaging system about any potential changes to the start of the school year.
