Man arrested for alleged shooting in Exeter

EXETER BOROUGH, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man has been arrested after he allegedly fired multiple shots into an occupied vehicle in Exeter Borough last week.

On May 8, Wyoming Area Regional Police were called to the 1200 block of Exeter Avenue in Exeter for a report of a man firing a shot into a car.

Through further investigation, police said they learned an argument occurred between a woman and a man identified as Edward Wasko, 37, of Wyoming.

Rescue highlights dangers of firefighting 

EDWARDSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two firefighters were rescued from that burning building Thursday morning in Edwardsville. It highlights the dangers associated with firefighting.

"It's one of the most dangerous professions in the country, and today just proved it," said Chief Frank Guido from Kingston/Forty Fort Fire Department.

The dramatic rescues of two firefighters caught on camera. It happened Thursday morning during a fire at the office of the late District Judge James Haggerty in Edwardsville.

Inmate charged with smuggling meth into prison

HAMILTON TWP., MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Investigators say an inmate at the Monroe County Correctional Facility tried to smuggle in meth.

According to the District Attorney's Office, on May 2 Kenneth Macelak Jr., 40, was brought into the Monroe County Correctional Facility. While being processed, correctional officers found methamphetamine hidden on Macelak's body, police stated.

The Monroe County District Attorney’s office filed charges against Macelak after an investigation was completed.

Police: Repeat Wyoming Valley Mall retail theft offender wanted

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police are searching for a man who is allegedly a repeat retail theft offender at the Wyoming Valley Mall.

According to the Wilkes-Barre Township Police, for the last two months, the man pictured has been going to JC Penneys at the Wyoming Valley Mall and stealing Levi's jeans.

Three charged with multiple retail thefts in Monroe County

Police say it takes the suspect less than two minutes to get in and out of the store with each theft. The total loss from the thefts so far is over $5,000, officers noted.

UGI announces upcoming price increases

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — UGI Utilities announced upcoming increases in rates for consumers.

UGI will increase rates by 4.5% for residential customers, 6% for commercial customers, and 6.5% for industrial retail customers starting June 1.

According to UGI, on June 1 consumers will see an increase in rates followed by an additional increase projected by 7.3% for residential customers, 9.6% for commercial customers, and 10.6% for industrial retail customers on December 1.

Fake deputy sheriff allegedly scams man out of $2,500

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man believing he was talking to an officer was scammed out of $2,5000 for a fake outstanding warrant bill, police stated.

According to the Wilkes-Barre City Police, a 26-year-old man from Wilkes-Barre reported he got a phone call from a person claiming to be employed by the Luzerne County Sheriff`s Office.

The scammer told the victim that he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and he needed to pay $2,500, police said. The victim then transferred the money before realizing it was a scam.

19-year-old pleads guilty to 10 counts of sexual assault

LOCK HAVEN, CLINTON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Officials say a man who was charged with sex crimes after being arrested while "suspiciously" walking near an elementary school has pleaded guilty to statutory sexual assault.

According to the Clinton County District Attorney's Office, 19-year-old Demario Baer from Lock Haven pleaded guilty to ten counts of statutory sexual assault.

The D.A. office states Baer was charged on January 9 after officers discovered evidence of sex crimes involving a 14-year-old victim after Baer was arrested for an incident on January 4.

Honesdale debuts new women's military monument

HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— With Memorial Day just around the corner, many events are planned to commemorate those who have sacrificed their lives for our country.

A new monument stands big and tall at the corner of 9th and Court Street in Honesdale Thursday morning. Block letters stating "Salute to Military Women" catch the eyes of many in the community.

PD: Drug house shut down, cocaine and guns seized

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Investigators say they have shut down a drug house in Luzerne County resulting in an arrest, crack cocaine and guns seized.

Pittston City Police Department reports in May an investigation was done into the distribution of crack cocaine from a home in the 200 block of Parsonage Street.

Suspicious Scranton death ruled homicide

A search warrant was executed on Wednesday, May 15 resulting in the arrest of Darryl Taylor, 45, of Harrisburg, and crack cocaine, two handguns, and cash seized from the house.
