NEPA working to help those impacted by Hurricane Helene

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — NEPA is working to help those impacted by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.

From Tuesday through Saturday, McCarthy Tire Service is working with AMP Global Strategies to collect supplies.

Coats for Kids: 28/22 News accepting donations until 8:00 p.m.

They are accepting donations of water, non-perishable food items, baby supplies, toiletries, sanitizer, and other supplies.

Former Penn State students sentenced for 2017 Piazza hazing death

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle A. Henry has announced that two former Penn State University Students were sentenced for their roles in a 2017 hazing incident.

According to Henry, 28-year-old Brendan Young and 27-year-old Daniel Casey both previously pleaded guilty in July to 14 counts of hazing and a single count of reckless endangerment in the Timothy Piazza hazing case.

Principal on leave, charged with failing to report teacher, student relationship

CLINTON TWP., WYOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police say the principal at Lackawanna Trail High School is being charged after failing to report an alleged teacher-student relationship.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, 42-year-old Mark Patrick Murphy, the principal of Lackawanna Trail High School, is under investigation after failing to report a relationship between a teacher and a high school student to "Childline," a state-run agency to report child abuse.

Reminder: Deadline coming up for mail-in ballots applications

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Department of State announced that voters have four weeks to apply for a mail ballot for the November 5 general election.

According to the Secretary of the Commonwealth AI Schmidt, they are reminding PA voters who want to vote by mail have until 5:00 p.m. on October 29 to apply for their ballot.

"Casting your ballot by mail is a safe, secure, and convenient way to vote," Schmidt said.

Boulders placed around Luzerne County Election Bureau

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — From Your Local Election Headquarters: A visible sign that security measures are being increased in Luzerne County.

This comes in the wake of the Luzerne County Manager's decision not to deploy ballot drop boxes for the November election, citing safety and security concerns.

These large boulders were placed around the county-owned Penn Place Office Building on Tuesday and more are on the way.

County Manager Romilda Crocamo says it's all in an effort to keep county employees and the public safe during this election.

Man loses $7.4K during bail money scam

HAZLE TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police are investigating a fraud incident where a man was scammed out of over $7,000.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on August 18 troopers were told of a fraud incident that happened in Hazle Township.

The victim, a 79-year-old man, told troopers he got a call from someone he believed was his nephew. The scammer told the victim that he was involved in a DUI crash and needed bail money to get out of jail, PSP stated.

Comedian Jeff Dunham returns to Wilkes-Barre Twp.

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Comedian Jeff Dunham will bring his "Artificial Intelligence Tour" to the Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza.

According to a press release, Dunham holds a local arena record for being the all-time best-selling individual artist with over 50,000 tickets sold at the Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza.
