'White spots' found by custodians at local school ahead of first day

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An elementary school in Luzerne County set to open this week could face different arrangements for a small group of students, faculty, and staff.

Wilkes-Barre Area School District is expected to start school this Thursday.

28/22 News was told custodians discovered white spots on the carpets inside Kistler Elementary while moving furniture.

Congressional race heats up in NEPA as Scranton mayor announces campaign

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The eyes of the political world are once again on northeastern Pennsylvania as the race for the Eighth Congressional District Seat is already heating up.

The midterm elections are more than a year out, but the seat held by Republican Rob Bresnahan is seen as one that could influence the balance of power in Congress. On Tuesday, a top area Democrat threw her name into the ring.

Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti announced Tuesday morning that she will challenge freshman Congressman Rob Bresnahan.

Two charged after gun fight in Jefferson Township

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say a weekend gun fight in Jefferson Township has left two people in custody.

28/22 News Reporter Joe Mason explains what led up to the violence and the charges both suspects now face. That gun fight happened on Sunday night on Cortez Road in Jefferson Township.

51-year-old Michelle Brislin and 48-year-old Ted Kalinowski are the two suspects. Both are now in custody.

Man arrested for allegedly acting as Homeland Security

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A Columbia County man was arrested after two incidents where he was allegedly impersonating a public servant, according to the Wilkes-Barre Police City Police Department.

The release states that police conducted a traffic stop on 45-year-old Shawn Smith of Bloomsburg.

Authorities say that Smith was driving a 2011 Ford Taurus with emergency lighting and "Police Interceptor" labeling.

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania American Water has announced there is a 12-inch water main break along South Main Street in Hanover Township.

According to PA American Water, approximately 40 customers are impacted, with anticipated repairs happening later Tuesday night.

Driver charged after deadly W-B Twp. crash

WILKES-BARRE TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The driver involved in a crash that killed a man has been charged with homicide by vehicle while under the influence, police stated.

State police stated on August 23, they were called to a single-vehicle crash on the Exit 168 off-ramp of Interstate 81 around 2:30 a.m.

As stated in the affidavit, a man, 26-year-old Adam Shaw of Plymouth, was found dead on the roadway in front of the car, appearing to have been ejected.

Naked man accused of assaults at senior living home

BUTLER TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police arrested a man after they say he broke into an assisted living home while naked and assaulted several residents.

According to the Butler Township Police, officers received a 911 call from the Fritzingertown Senior Living Community around 11:50 p.m., claiming a "naked intruder" was assaulting residents in the facility.
