WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) — More than 24 hours after the winter storm started, the cleanup is well underway in large and small communities. It's a pretty tall task in bigger cities.
That cleanup started as soon as the snow began accumulating Wednesday. Today, crews moved into a second day for a job that won't end even when this day is done.
Getting out from under a heavy snowfall in Wilkes-Barre requires heavy equipment. The city used bulldozers to clear some of its more than 600 roads.

SUGARLOAF TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) — As the snowfall continued to fall across our region, state and local authorities urged people not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
Vehicles were having a tough time making it up the mountain that leads into the Conyngham Valley. A tractor trailer also got stuck trying to get into the parking lot of the Hampton Inn. The bottom line... the roads were treacherous.

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — UPDATE: According to the Wilkes-Barre Township Police Department Facebook page, police were dispatched to the Wyoming Valley Mall for a possible child abduction.
At this time, any reports of a child abduction are unsubstantiated and no parent or guardian has reported a child missing.

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) — A garage in Hazle Township was heavily damaged by fire just after 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. It’s located at 23rd and Carson Streets.
The owner tells Eyewitness News three dogs perished in the blaze. A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause.

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) — Preparations are underway in Hazleton in anticipation of a snow event Wednesday into Thursday.
However, the city is no stranger to snow storms. With an elevation of around 1,900 feet, it's the highest city in Pennsylvania and usually sees more snow than many other local communities.
Street crews here say they are ready to do battle with the season's first major snow storm. They are asking for cooperation and patience from residents as they do the job of clearing the streets.

NEWPORT TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) — Police have been investigating human remains found in Newport Township along the Susquehanna River since late last week. There are some details that may point to them being the remains of Richard Walski who is accused of murdering his wife Patricia in the summer.
New details emerged today from the Luzerne County DA stating that the identification for Richard Walski and other "known personal items" were found near the remains, which were in an area consistent with the search area set up to find Walski.

SUGAR NOTCH, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A woman is found dead in Luzerne County Sunday and her son is behind bars.
Police say 60-year-old Patricia Watkins was beaten to death in her Sugar Notch home along Maffet Street. They say 39-year-old Erik Watkins is the suspect of the crime.
The criminal complaint says, when state police arrived at the house, he admitted to killing his mother. Neighbors Monday night are saying it's not something you'd expect from a close-knit community.

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The search is on at this hour for the person who shot and killed a clerk at a convenience store during an armed robbery over the weekend in Hazleton.
Investigators held a late afternoon news conference providing new details about the deadly incident. The deadly armed robbery took place at Craig’s Food Mart on West Broad Street. Investigators and police are now looking for the person responsible and it’s a crime that has stunned Hazleton.

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) — An investigation is intensifying Monday into an armed robbery and death investigation in Hazleton over the weekend.
Police say the armed robbery took place at Craig’s Food Mart on West Broad Street at around 9:30 Saturday night. Investigators say 911 received a call from a person inside the store asking for help.
When they arrived, investigators say they learned that an armed robbery had taken place and found a body inside the store.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One man was injured in a dispute that turned into a shooting Sunday night and police are now searching for the perpetrators.
Police responded to a home on Jones Street in Wilkes-Barre around 8 p.m. for reports of a shooting. They say they found a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to a local hospital.
