PennDOT discusses bridge safety in NEPA

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Bridges have been making headlines after the collapse of the Baltimore Key Bridge just a few weeks ago.

According to officials from PennDOT, around 15% of state-owned bridges in Luzerne County are in poor condition.

They say bridges are inspected every two years or more, depending on the health of the structure.

"So one of the federal requirements and state requirements is that every two years, a bridge gets an in-depth safety inspection," said Richard Roman district executive, PennDOT District 4.

'House of Horrors' investigation intensifies

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — New details are emerging Thursday about a homicide and death investigation that centers on a home in Wilkes-Barre.

Five people have been charged this week in connection with the torture and beating death of a Michigan woman inside that home on Carlisle Street.

Back Mountain Railroad Club reopens after flooding

DALLAS, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local train modeling non-profit is back on track after severe flooding damaged its former clubhouse in Luzerne County.

The sights and sounds of trains on the track are a breath of fresh air for members of the Back Mountain Railroad Club in Dallas.

The club’s previous location was flooded back in September, 2023, damaging part of its extensive train collection.

3 wanted for allegedly assaulting handicapped senior citizen and bystander

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Police say they are attempting to identify three people who allegedly assaulted a handicapped senior citizen and a bystander who came to her defense.

On March 30 around 8:00 p.m., Wilkes-Barre Township Police say they began searching for the three people pictured below after the reported assault.

Investigators said the trio fled in a gray Nissan Pathfinder after assaulting the senior citizen and the bystander.

DA: Wilkes-Barre death investigations connected

Expansion of ARPA assistance program

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Luzerne County Council unanimously voted to expand income eligibility requirements for a newly developed heating and utility assistance program.

The program is distributed through the Commission on Economic Opportunity.

They say the expansion of income eligibility will be a big help to those in need.

The American Rescue Plan Utility and Heating Assistance Program is for households that would not qualify otherwise for heating and utility assistance.

Gruesome details highlighted in Carlisle Street homicide investigation

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Details into an intensive Wilkes-Barre police investigation where five people have been accused of holding a woman hostage and beating her to death are now coming to light.

Court documents revealed gruesome details Tuesday into the death of a Michigan woman, Nicole Cuevas-Ingram, whose body was found bound and buried in a shallow grave in the basement of 142 Carlisle Street in South Wilkes-Barre.

28/22 News has broken down the information on how the alleged torture of Cuevas-Ingram began and ended, according to a police affidavit.

PD: Woman arrested with over 100 pills of suspected ecstasy

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Police said a woman was arrested after they found over 100 pills of suspected ecstasy during a traffic stop on Tuesday.

Around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, police pulled over 40-year-old Anna Marie Hillard, from Hanover Township, in the area of Kings Road for an alleged traffic violation. 

During the traffic stop, investigators said Hillard was found to have 108 pills of suspected ecstasy.
