Kids took charge in Larksville at Children's Business Fair

LARKSVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — If you think big business is just for grown-ups, think again. Some young local entrepreneurs are proving that age is just a number when it comes to creativity, confidence, and cash flow.

Kids took charge on Saturday at a Children's Business Fair at High Point Baptist Church in Larksville.

Visitors checked out 15 different booths to shop for handmade crafts, grab a walking taco, or even build a birdhouse.

HUNLOCK CREEK, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — All kinds of ceremonies and celebrations are happening this holiday weekend, including one that is dedicated to one of Mother Nature's most crucial insects.

Folks turned out to the Garden Drive-In on Saturday for a Honeybee Festival.

They checked out vendors' booths that featured all kinds of items, including honey, crafts, and clothing.

Attendees also learned about the importance of honeybees, primarily as pollinators of major food crops and many plant species.

LUZERNE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — On Saturday, the true meaning of Memorial Day weekend was on display. A somber service was held to bring the community together for reflection, and for many, a return to tradition after six long years.

Under gray skies but lifted spirits, Luzerne Borough stood united, not just as neighbors, but also a community bound by gratitude.

"Though we come from different walks of life, we share the same debt to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, so that we might live in peace and freedom," Luzerne Mayor Ron Reino said.

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Luzerne County Community College is marking 50 years of its high-ranking nursing program.

This comes as Pennsylvania faces a statewide shortage of the crucial caretakers.

State data shows an expected shortage of 20,000 nurses by 2026. More than 100 nurses from Luzerne County Community College's nursing program will soon enter the workforce and fill some of those roles.

Rock and Roll HOFer coming to Wilkes-Barre this summer

The city is bringing Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Oates to Public Square this summer for the third annual free summer concert series.

Oates is half of the legendary duo "Hall and Oates" which churned out hit after hit in the 1970s and 80s including such smashes as "An American singer, guitarist, songwriter, and record producer, best known for his work in the pop-rock duo Hall & Oates with Daryl Hall."

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A beloved hardware store will soon close its doors in Wilkes-Barre.

After 70 years, Walter's Hardware on Coal Street in Wilkes-Barre will close.

The closure comes after the death of 72-year-old owner Walter Letanski who unexpectedly passed away last December.

Expect a cool, soggy Memorial Day weekend

He along with his wife Karen, owned and operated Walter's Hardware.

She has now decided it is time to retire.
