Police investigating after dogs found dead in VFW

KINGSTON TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Luzerne County man is under investigation after two dogs were found dead inside a hot truck outside a local VFW.

Police say Jerry Rynkiewicz left his two golden retrievers in a parked truck while he was inside the Exeter VFW on Sunday.

With the dangerous heat that day, the dogs didn't survive.

On Friday, officers served a search warrant at his Kingston Township home, where they found signs of disturbed earth and a smell of decomposition.

Annual concert series back in Luzerne County

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A free concert series started Friday in Hazleton.

Friday was the start night of second annual Rockin' the Mountain Concert series featuring tribute bands.

The concert is held at City View Park and free to attend.

Police serve warrant in connection to two dogs dying in car

KINGSTON TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Police served a search warrant in Luzerne County Friday in connection with the death of two dogs that were found inside a truck outside a local VFW this past Sunday.

While it's unclear exactly how the dogs died, the record setting temperatures would have made the inside of the truck extremely dangerous.

Jerry Rynkiewicz is being accused of leaving his dogs, two golden retrievers, inside his truck while he was drinking at the VFW in Exeter.

Luzerne County in legal battle with Keystone Mission

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— We begin with Luzerne County filing a lawsuit against a local non-profit.

Officials say it's to get back nearly a half million dollars in funds.

The lawsuit is filed against Keystone Mission that recently announced it will close two of its local homeless shelters including one in Wilkes-Barre.

The suit aims to get back more than $400,000 that the county allocated in ARPA funds to the organization over the past year or so.

Woman rescued from house fire dies at hospital

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A woman who was rescued from a house fire Tuesday has died at the hospital.

According to Lehigh County Coroner Daniel Buglio, 52-year-old Rebecca Kowalski died Thursday, June 26, around 4:40 a.m. at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest.

Coroner Buglio states the cause of Kowalski's death was due to complications of thermal burns and smoke inhalation after a house fire in Kingston occurred on Tuesday, June 24.

Wyoming Valley Mall projected to reopen July 2

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) —  The Wyoming Valley Mall is closed Friday for a 3rd consecutive day due to a power outage.

According to the mall’s Facebook page, the mall was closed on Wednesday for a power outage and has yet to reopen as of Friday, June 27, but repairs to the electric lines are predicted to be done by Wednesday July 2.
