Organization remembers addiction victims

BERWICK, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Coming together to remember lives lost to overdose.

Friday March 6 is Black Balloon Day, but instead of releasing balloons, organizers have created their own unique memorial.

Rows of glowing luminary bags stand as a tribute, each one representing a loved one taken by addiction.

‘First Friday’ event features local artists

The event brings awareness to substance use and offers support to grieving families.

Volunteers are also distributing Narcan kits and harm reduction resources to help prevent future tragedies.

Day Three of Read Across America

(WBRE/WYOU)— It’s Read Across America Week, and the team here at 28/22 News has already been getting in on the fun.

The I-team's Andy Mehalshick stopped by Solomon Plains Elementary School to read to first grade students.

He read a book about staying in bed late.

Andy says the students in Mrs. Tona's class were very attentive and asked great questions.

This was Andy's 21 year reading at the school.

And down the hall from Andy in another Solomon/Plains classroom was PA live co-host Rachel Malak!

She read to Mrs. Cunius's class.

Fire department unveils new vehicles

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A local fire department unveiled three new chief fire vehicles.

They were showcased at the southside fire station on Broad Street in Hazleton.

The vehicles are 2024 F-250 pickup trucks, replacing their 2017 models.

The trucks are equipped with all emergency lighting plus roll out trays, SCBA holders, and extinguisher holders.

The vehicles will be used by the department chiefs on duty for all responses, emergency responses, and for everyday fire department business.
