Conditions still dicey in Wilkes-Barre after winter storm

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The storm may be winding down but conditions are still dicey.

While many of us are staying indoors, others are not letting the storm stop them from hitting the roads.

28/22 News Reporter Gianna Galli has been out in the storm since Sunday afternoon.

It was much colder Sunday night than it was during the bulk of the storm.

While it wasn't snowing later Sunday evening in Wilkes-Barre, earlier, when it was coming down, crews were out working to try and keep up with conditions.

Is using salt effective on roads during bitter cold?

(WBRE/WYOU) — As temperatures drop and roads become slick in northeastern and central Pennsylvania, we wanted to know if salting roads was an effective way to keep drivers from slipping and sliding while traveling.

PennDOT is reminding drivers to slow down and exercise caution as temperatures are expected to drop and remain in the low teens through Wednesday.

While crews continue to treat roadways, PennDOT explains the low temperatures may impact the effectiveness of the materials used.

PHOTOS: Firefighters battle Huntington Township fire as winter storm rages

HUNTINGTON TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — As snow falls across northeastern Pennsylvania, firefighters were called to action in Huntington Township.

At around 3:00 p.m., Huntington Valley Volunteer Fire Company and multiple other fire crews were called to the unit block of Ftorkowski Road in Huntington Township for a reported fire incident.

Battling red-hot flames in the thick of a Sunday winter storm, fire crews were challenged near Shickshinny.

Smoke, making it unbearable to see, poured from a multi-barn fire at Silver Lake Farms in Huntington Township.

I-80 West in Luzerne, Columbia Counties reopens after multi-tractor-trailer crash

(WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) says a major roadway in both Luzerne and Columbia Counties was closed after a tractor-trailer crash on Sunday and has since reopened.

Shortly after 4:00 p.m., PennDOT announced Interstate 80 Westbound is closed, with a detour in place on Route 93, from mile markers 247 to 256, Conyngham/Nescopeck, in Columbia and Luzerne Counties after a multi-tractor-trailer crash.

Part of I-380 northbound reopened after crash

COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A portion of Interstate 380 is now reopened after a multi-vehicle crash occurred Sunday afternoon, according to PA-511.

According to Monroe County Communications Center, crews were called to the mile marker 10 on I-380 NB for a reported multi-vehicle crash just before 1:00 p.m.

Officials say that multiple people are being treated for injuries, but the severity of the injuries are unknown.

Vehicle and speed restrictions lifted across NEPA

(WBRE/WYOU)— The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has lifted the speed and vehicle restrictions across major roadways in NEPA.

As of around 8 a.m. all speed limits have been restored across the region.

The following interstates still had reduced speed limits of 45 mph and vehicle restrictions of commercial vehicles only in the right lane according to PennDOT.

Interstate 81 in Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Susquehanna counties.

Interstate 84 in Lackawanna, Pike, and Wayne counties.

Interstate 380 in Lackawanna and Wayne counties.
