Scranton School District says cyber attack cost them more than $100K

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A cyber attack in March cost the Scranton School District more than $100,000 in fees and ransom.

School district officials told 28/22 News it cost them over $25,000 in ransom and associated fees, including an additional $100,000 payment to a forensic expert.

The March 15 ransomware attack caused outages and disruptions to the school district's systems.

DEP releases details after sewage leak into river

SELINSGROVE, SNYDER COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 28/22 News has an update on the Snyder County sewage line that ruptured pouring hundreds of thousands of gallons of sewage into a creek flowing into the Susquehanna River.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection says the break happened on Sunday, September 22, near the eastern Snyder County Regional Authority's Sewage Treatment Plant in Selinsgrove.

As a result, over 459,000 gallons of sewage was dumped into the water.

Lackawanna County to use ballot drop boxes in upcoming election

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There's been a lot of attention lately on ballot drop boxes in northeastern Pennsylvania. Luzerne County won't have them out this election, but in Lackawanna County, the boxes are already set up in several locations Monday afternoon.

The decision to reinstate the ballot drop boxes was made last week by the county's board of elections.

Voters in Lackawanna County now have access to ballot drop boxes.

Friends of the Poor Thanksgiving Dinner to expand

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An annual Thanksgiving dinner meets an ever-growing need in Lackawanna County. The Friends of the Poor expects to serve more dinners this year than in years past, but that comes at a cost.

It's an annual tradition that goes back nearly five decades.

"It began 48 years ago with feeding 24 people for the Thanksgiving dinner and now it's turned into this week-long program," said Friends of the Poor President and CEO Megan Loftus.

Now, it will be bigger than ever before.
