Community reacts as Dunmore native heads to Big Game

DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It's a big day for Bucktown! Hometown pride is at an all-time high as Dunmore native Vic Fangio heads to the big game as the Philadelphia Eagle's Defensive Coordinator.

Fangio has a long history of professional coaching, but this is his first year with the Philadelphia Eagles. His leadership has given the team the best defense in the league.

"It's a great thing for our community. I think the greatest thing is that he's a great example to the students in our district," said Dunmore Highschool Football Coach Kevin McHale.

Tamaqua Area students 'manufacturing' skills

TAMAQUA, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The manufacturing industry is considered a vital engine of economic growth here in the US, Yet many young people may not understand the impact those jobs have.

Some local students are quickly learning, thanks to a statewide contest.

It's a roll call of sorts for nine Tamaqua Area Middle School Students. They are participating in an annual contest called "What's So Cool About Manufacturing."

Active weather pattern will bring wind, snow showers to NEPA

(WBRE/WYOU) — We're tracking a clipper-type winter storm that will impact our area Tuesday night and Wednesday.

First, you can expect snow showers across northern Pennsylvania Tuesday evening and overnight. Snow has the potential to accumulate between a coating to one inch. The farther south that we live, there will be little to no snow.

'Professional bank robber' arrived in Uber, cops say

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say a man claiming to be a professional bank robber took an Uber to commit a bank robbery in Kingston.

The Kingston Police Department says on January 24 around 2:30 p.m., officers were called to M&T Bank on Wyoming Avenue for a reported robbery.

Police said a Ford Fusion entered the bank parking lot and a man exited the car, placed a ski mask over his face, then approached a teller, presenting her with a demand note.

UGI files request to raise gas prices nearly 11%

(WBRE/WYOU) — UGI Utilities Gas Division has filed a request with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to increase its base rates by $110.4 million annually.

UGI says they are requesting to increase the base rates for residential, commercial, and industrial customers to recover costs related to system improvements and operations necessary to maintain safe and reliable natural gas service.

If the request is approved, residential customers will see about an 11% increase in their monthly bill.

Latino communities voice concerns over immigration enforcement

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Trump administration's illegal immigration raids are continuing around the nation on Monday and those raids are being closely watched by many people in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Those raids come in the aftermath of a federal policy change made last week that allows them to be carried out in places like schools and churches.
