Diocese of Scranton removes priest for alleged sexual contact with minor

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Diocese of Scranton announced the removal of Father John Ruth after the Diocesan Review Board said accusations against him alleging inappropriate contact with a minor appeared to be credible.

On Thursday, August 22, the dioceses were made aware of a report of inappropriate sexual contact by Father John Ruth with a minor occurring from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s.

Pennsylvania voters can cast a provisional ballot if their mail ballot is rejected, court says

A court decision in the presidential battleground of Pennsylvania means voters can cast a provisional ballot in place of a mail-in ballot that is rejected for a garden-variety mistake they made when they returned it. Lawyers in the case say Thursday's decision will apply to all counties. An appeal could be filed within days to the state Supreme Court. Parties in the case couldn't immediately say how many Pennsylvania counties don't let voters replace a rejected mail-in ballot with a provisional ballot.

Coroner identifies custodial worker at Dunmore Elementary

DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland has identified the man who was found dead in Dunmore Elementary School.

Dunmore Police Chief Salvatore Marchese tells 28/22 News that they, along with the Lackawanna County DA, are actively investigating a death at the Dunmore Elementary Center after a man died in the school on August 27.

According to the release, 81-year-old Gary Porter was discovered deceased in the school on Tuesday night.

Lewisburg Municipal Parking Lot 4 reopens

LEWISBURG — The gravel section of Lewisburg Borough Municipal Parking Lot 4 has reopened.The lot is located along Cherry Alley between North Sixth and North Seventh streets (behind Brendan's Towne Tavern).The borough has completed most of its floodplain restoration project activities along this section of Limestone/Bull Run and the northern section of the parking lot has been covered with a new layer of gravel and lined for parking.
