Storm takes out state park splash pad in Lackawanna County

NORTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Another splash pad in Lackawanna County closed casts a shadow on summer fun. It seems Lackawanna County might be unlucky when it comes to its splash pads.

At Lackawanna State Park on Tuesday night, a storm knocked out the power to one of their fan-favorite attractions.

"I actually had staff here that called me because there was a direct lightning strike on the pool surface itself. So, obviously, that created some problems," Lackawanna State Park Manager Lee Dillon said.

3 manufacturing plants to close in Columbia, Luzerne Counties

28/22 NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Hundreds of workers at three local plants are bracing for layoffs.

IG Design Group Americas notified the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry that it will close its facilities in Berwick, Salem Township, and Briar Creek Township.

The company is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will lay off 380 employees.

One of the company sites that will close is Berwick Offray, which makes bows, ribbons, and materials in the floral industry.

Scranton City Council rejects proposal to raise parking fees

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Scranton business owners and residents have dodged a proposed parking fee hike.

City council rejected a proposal Tuesday night that would have raised metered parking rates and extended enforcement hours across the city, including on Saturdays.

The "No" vote came after a strong community turnout.

For now, the plan is off the table, but it's not necessarily gone for good. Council could propose it again at a future meeting if they choose to revisit the issue.

Comcast donates $35K, laptops to Outreach in Scranton event

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Comcast is donating laptops and funding to help job seekers build digital skills and change their lives: A national effort to expand digital access is reaching Northeast Pennsylvania.

Comcast awarded a $35,000 grant and donated 35 laptops to the Outreach Center for Community Resources in Scranton.

The nonprofit provides workforce development and digital literacy training to people facing barriers to employment, including individuals with past incarceration, disabilities, and those starting over.

Free community closet to benefits low-income people

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Giving back to those in need is priceless, and on Wednesday, organizers and volunteers came together to hold a community closet free of charge at The Wright Center in Wilkes-Barre.

The Wright Center opened its Community Closet for the community at its Wilkes-Barre location on Wednesday.

It serves as a space for those in need to pick up anything from shirts, winter coats, shoes, dress clothes, and more, all for free.

MOOSIC, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Our Hunger Free Summer campaign is officially in full force.

This year, we are partnering with “Gerrity’s The Fresh Grocer & Gerrity’s Ace Hardware”.

We will visit a different Gerrity’s location each Wednesday to collect non-perishable food items and money that will be given to families in need in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Search underway for missing Pa. woman

WYOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police are searching for a woman missing for over a week in Wyoming County.

According to PSP, 32-year-old Tiffany Sherbondy of Tunkhannock was last seen on July 1 around 10:00 a.m. near the 2400 block of State Route 6 in Factoryville.

Police describe Sherbondy as 5'55'', 110 lbs with brown hair and hazel eyes. Troopers believe Sherbondy has ties to Wayne and Lackawanna Counties.

18-year-old charged in child porn investigation

SALEM TOWNSHIP, WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — According to the Wayne County District Attorney, a man has been arrested and charged with 31 counts of possession of child porn.

The DA says 18-year-old Constantine Dim Homisak, of Salem Township, has been arrested after the social media app Discord reported images of apparent child pornography shared and possessed by Homisak.

State Police say they searched Homisak's home and electronic devices and charged him with 31 counts of possession of child pornography.

(WBRE/WYOU) — State police released the results of their July 4th checkpoint enforcement that resulted in over 400 DUI arrests.

The Pennsylvania State Police stated that they investigated 803 vehicle crashes during the four-day July 4th period, from July 3 to July 6.

Police say twelve people died in the crashes, and 58 non-fatal crashes involved a driver under the influence.

State troopers made 458 arrests for driving under the influence and 150 drug-related arrests.
