Wyoming County Fair kicks off Wednesday

MESHOPPEN TOWNSHIP, WYOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The annual Wyoming County Fair starts Wednesday in Meshoppen Township.

The fair brings several days of excitement and activities, including a tractor pull, horse and livestock shows, and a 5K race.

There is also a demolition derby along with a high school rodeo that showcases young talent. Cornhole tournaments are also happening.

On Saturday night, country artist Kameron Marlowe takes the stage.

Residents enjoy summer's end at PA state park

WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — As the summer comes to a close, many campgrounds and state parks will see a dip in activity, but not before the holiday weekend. Northeastern Pennsylvania's state parks have a steady amount of foot traffic these days.

A lot of people were in a Luzerne County park to soak up the last few weeks of warm weather.

Summer activities and hobbies will soon start to slow down, especially those that include being outdoors.

Lawsuit filed against Williamsport School District

WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Lycoming County school is now facing a federal lawsuit after a student was strapped to a backboard in class. The district confirms the teacher has resigned.

A lawsuit was filed against Williamsport Area School District this past Friday. The suit states the teacher strapped a rising senior to a backboard.

According to the suit, Richard Caschera was hired by the school district in May to teach the district's homeland security program.

Shooting under investigation after shots fired

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A shooting is under investigation after police say multiple gunshots were fired in Wilkes-Barre.

On August 25, around 7:30 p.m., officers were called to the intersection of Gilligan and Brown Streets for a report of gunshots being fired.

Woman dies, road reopened after crash

According to the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department, a witness told officers that she heard about three gunshots and saw two men running on Gilligan Street.

PennDOT announces road closure in Lackawanna County

SCOTT TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — PennDOT announced that part of Route 347 in Scott Township will be closed for a culvert replacement project.

According to PennDOT, Route 347 (Justus Boulevard) between Route 632 (Carbondale Road) and Route 524 (Kennedy Creek Drive) in Scott Township will be closed due to a culvert replacement project from September 2 to the end of fall 2025.

A detour will be in place and will utilize Interstate 81 from Exit 197 (Waverly) to Exit 199 (Scott).

Full steam ahead for Railfest

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An event happening this weekend in Lackawanna County is all steam ahead, getting ready to celebrate railroading in our region.

Learning all the bells and whistles at Steamtown National Historic Site.

“This is the Baldwin 26 060. This was made in 1929 in Eddystone, Pennsylvania,” explained Christian Mazzocchi, heavy mobile equipment mechanic at the Steamtown National Historic Site.

It’s something that’s part of Mazzocchi’s job as a heavy mobile equipment mechanic.
