Pennsylvania man gets 25 years for friend's death in Lowville

LOWVILLE, N.Y. (WWTI) - A 26-year-old Pennsylvania man is going to jail for 25 years after in convicted for causing his friend's death.

On Tuesday afternoon, Jacob Vanbergen was sentenced to 25 years in prison in Lewis County Court. He will also be under the supervision of probation for five years after his release from prison.

In June, Vanbergen was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter for the death of his friend, Brandon Shepker, in a Lewis County hotel room.

NEW YORK (WPIX) – Because 1 in 4 people currently living in the U.S. wasn't yet born on Sept. 11, 2001, teaching about the terror attacks and their effects is an evolving challenge as that fateful day moves further into the past. 

A history teacher who writes curriculum and a professor who trains social studies instructors both say that connecting the situation from 24 years ago to the lives of young people now is the key to helping students understand the relevance of what happened. Students are also talking about what resonates with them in relation to the tragedy.

OREM, Utah (AP) — The shooter who assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk and then vanished off a roof and into the woods remained at large more than 24 hours later Thursday as federal investigators appealed for the public's help by releasing a pair of photos of the person believed responsible.
