Truck driver charged with homicide after deadly crash in Monroe County

HAMILTON TWP., MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The truck driver involved in a Monroe County crash that killed three people last year is facing homicide charges.

The five-car crash happened in March 2023 when a tractor-trailer crossed the median on Route 33 in Hamilton Township and hit oncoming traffic.

Man wanted for alleged police chase with child in car

MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Investigators are looking for a man after they say he led police on a chase with a child inside the car.

The Stroud Area Regional Police Department stated in July 2024, officers tried to pull over a car where the driver, Adam Booker, 36, had several active warrants out of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. 

A chase started involving several police departments and during the pursuit, Booker called 911 to report that a woman and a 4-year-old were in the car with him, and "he was out of his mind," police reported.

FBI seeking information on male John Doe

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The FBI released a nationwide campaign for the information of a John Doe who may have information on a child sexual abuse victim.

According to the FBI, they are seeking information on a man who is believed to have critical information about the identity of a child victim in a sexual exploitation investigation.

As stated in the release, the man is described to be between the ages of 45 and 65, bald, with a dark goatee.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY — For those struggling to get into the holiday spirit, a new pop-up bar in Lackawanna County will help stir up some excitement.

Holiday vibes are shaken, poured, and served at a new pop-up bar in Scranton.

“We are in misfits,” said Danielle Pilotta, a sophomore at Lackawanna College.

The pop-up named Misfits has taken over 409 on Adams Avenue, Lackawanna College’s student-run restaurant. Now it’s bringing all the holiday cheer to the city through December 21st, but not the traditional kind.

Caretaker found guilty in home scam trial

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Guilty: That was the verdict handed down in the case of a jury of a Hazleton man who scammed a 95-year-old woman out of her home.

Investigators say 35-year-old Jeremy Cieniawa from Hazleton gained the trust of the wheelchair-bound woman and then violated it.

The jury deliberated for about three hours finding Jeremy Cieniawa guilty on all counts, including theft and crimes against a care-dependent person.

Prosecutors say and the jury believed that Jeremy Cieniawa took advantage of that trust for personal gain.

Ten charged with interstate auto theft conspiracy

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — A federal grand jury has charged ten people with an auto theft conspiracy where they would allegedly transport stolen vehicles across states.

According to U. S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam, from October 2023 through September 2024, ten suspects from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland, conspired to transport stolen vehicles across state lines and to receive, possess, conceal, store, sell, and dispose of stolen vehicles that had been transported.

The ten alleged suspects are as follows:

State police stand-off in Monroe County ends with arrest

MIDDLE SMITHFIELD TWP., MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police report a stand-off occurred in Monroe County that ended with a man's arrest.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on November 12, troopers were called to a residence on Sky Hawk Trail in Middle Smithfield Township for a disturbance.

Through an investigation, it was determined that a fight happened, and the suspect fledthe scene. An arrest warrant was issued for the suspect, Hollis Samuel Edwards.
