Rodent infestation shuts down school kitchen

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A rodent infestation in the kitchen area of a local school has parents upset and demanding answers from district officials. Parents claim they were never informed about the problem.

The rodent infestation was discovered last Thursday at the West Hazleton Elementary-Middle School. Nearly 1,000 students attend the school.

School district officials say they acted immediately after the problem was discovered.

Woman hurt as strong wind topples tree onto car

DORRANCE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A woman was hurt when she was driving down a Luzerne County road and a gust of wind took down a tree that landed on her car.

On Tuesday, Stephen Morgan from Slocum Township Fire Company said the tree hit the hood and front of the 50-year-old woman's vehicle while she was driving in the area of 8155 Blue Ridge Trail.

Neighbors say the wind was picking up when they heard the crack of the tree as it fell.

Volunteer fire company seeking much-needed funding 

SNYDERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local volunteer fire company is shedding light on its need for funding to continue its service in the Poconos.

You can always find turnout gear out at firehouses like the Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder in Snydersville ready for firefighters to grab and go in an emergency. But when there isn’t a call in Monroe County, they’re closing up shop and heading to work.

Blue Ridge is 100% volunteer, meaning a majority of its funding comes from grants and fundraising.
