School expansion plans discussed in Hazleton

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A school district in Luzerne County is in desperate need of expanding. Its student population continues to grow each year but the space to hold them hasn't kept up.

On Thursday, more plans were discussed to try and fix the problem.

There are thousands of students attending Hazleton Area School District and officials say that number will only get larger.

Lackawanna mock trial team wins for first time in state history

The Abington Heights' Mock Trial Team competed in the National Championship and won for the first time in state history.

Abington Heights' Mock Trial Team has been known within the state for their hard work and dedication.

Now, they've made a name for themselves nationally, winning the Mock Trial National Championship over the weekend and making history in the state of Pennsylvania.

New plan for OYFS in Lackawanna County

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — On Thursday, the Lackawanna County Commissioners announced a first-of-its-kind initiative for their troubled Office of Youth and Family Services (OYFS.)

The office has been operating under a provisional license since May 2023 and has faced over a year of staffing shortages, legal trouble, and an overwhelming amount of cases.

On Wednesday afternoon, Lackawanna County Commissioners Bill Gaughan and Matt McGloin announced that the county will not seek state certification for its Department of Health.

Testimony continues in Justin Schuback Trial

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Thursday marks day four in the courtroom for the trial of Old Forge resident Justin Schuback, accused of robbing and killing the owner of a Lackawanna County restaurant.

Justin Schuback's cellmate, Carlos Perez, was the first witness called to the stand Thursday morning.

Perez testified that on one evening, both he and Schuback consumed a Suboxone pill, typically used to curb narcotic cravings, and spent the night discussing various topics.

New books on the block in Wilkes-Barre book drive

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Inmates at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility are getting some new reads thanks to some generous community donations.

The Leadership Northeast Core 2024 class and Dress for Success Luzerne County hosted their New Books on the Block Book Drive.

Truckloads of books were brought in and unloaded Thursday morning.

Flames broke out above the American Legion Club in Ashley Wednesday, causing extensive water damage to the establishment.
