Flags fly in Third Annual Bless Our Vets Flag Display dedicated to US military members

BERWICK, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two Berwick churches are holding their Third Annual Bless Our Vets Flag Display to honor local veterans.

For a $5 donation, people can dedicate a flag to current, retired, or deceased members of the US Military.

Each flag will have a card on it with the veteran's name, rank, and branch, and will be displayed in front of St. Joseph's and St. Mary's churches in Berwick.

Anyone interested in buying a flag or donating can stop by one of the churches or mail it in.

Florida man to brave Hurricane Milton

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — One resident with ties to our area in NEPA is staying put in Tampa. Mitch Sefchik says he knows it is a risk to stay but feels it is also a risk to leave.

"Why are you staying in Tampa when this hurricane is coming?," 28/22 News Reporter Kathryn Oleary asked. "There definitely a few reasons. We're not in a mandatory evacuation zone. They've evacuated zones A, B, and C, we're in zone E," Sefchik explained.

Being on the outskirts of the evacuation zones is not the only reason Mitch Sefchik decided to ride out Hurricane Milton.

City of Scranton prepares for Trump Rally

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — With four weeks until the presidential election the race to the White House is ramping up.

The Republican nominee former President Trump is set to swing through the battleground state of Pennsylvania Wednesday beginning with a stop in Scranton.

Former President Trump is holding a rally Wednesday at the Riverfront Sports Complex.

As with any presidential visit, this visit is expected to cause traffic congestion and road closures. Plus there is limited parking.

Third suspect chagred after Bloomsburg shooting

BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police say they have charged a third suspect for a Bloomsburg shooting investigation.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, troopers have identified Nicholas Romeo Jones, 20, from Berwick, as the third suspect involved in a Bloomsburg shooting investigation.

Police did not go into detail on Jones's involvement just that he has been charged with robbery and criminal use of a communication facility.

Jones was taken to the Columbia County Correctional Facility on a $75,000 straight bail.

18-year-old allegedly threatens shooting at Montoursville High School

WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An 18-year-old boy has been arrested after police say he threatened a shooting at Montoursville High School.

The affidavit states on October 2 an officer was approached by a student claiming she received a call from her ex-boyfriend, 18-year-old Yaa-sir Jennings-Cornelius, saying he was going to shoot up the school.

According to the criminal complaint, on October 3, officers arrested Jennings-Cornelius at a home in Williamsport after he allegedly pointed a black handgun at a screen in a Snapchat video.

DA: Man killed in police involved shooting pointed gun at officers

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sangueldolce states the man killed in a police-involved shooting did point a gun at officers during the incident.

DA Sam Sangueldolce tells 28/22 News that on Sunday, October 6, while responding to a domestic disturbance, officers found the man involved, Omar Jermaine Redditt, at a home on Holland Street.

The brutal murders of two teenagers happened one year ago.

16-year-old Angelito Caraballo and 18-year-old Hunter Mock were allegedly killed by a man they thought was their friend.

At the new Philadelphia Little League field, family and friends of the murdered teens are gathering here to remember the teens and to call for justice.

According to the Scranton Police Department, on October 7 around 9:00 p.m., officers were called to the 300 block of West Market Street for a stolen car report.

Scranton priest found guilty of child sexual assault, dismissed

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Diocese of Scranton announced the dismissal of Martin M. Boylan from the clerical state after being found guilty of sexually assaulting minors.

The diocese stated Boylan’s involuntarily dismissal from the clerical state was issued after he was found guilty under canon law of sexually assaulting two minors.

National Fire Prevention Week

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY — It’s fire prevention week, where the importance of smoke alarms are being highlighted by firefighters across the nation and locally.

Parked outside the Nanticoke Area Education Complex is a house on wheels, but the interior is all about fire safety.

“We needed to do something to start educating the community on the importance of smoke alarms in the home,” said Chief Mark Boncal, Nanticoke City Fire Department.
