Carbon County nonprofit hands out air quality monitors

JIM THORPE, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — With the wildfire going on, a nonprofit called Save Carbon County is handing out purple air quality monitors to people in Jim Thorpe.

The monitors assess the air, and they will give scaled readings on whether the air is safe or not within the vicinity of the device.

Zero to 100 is safe in the green, while 300 and above in purple means it's not safe to breathe the air.

Police looking to identify suspect after monument vandalized

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police are asking the public for help identifying a man they say vandalized a monument at a local high school.

Stroud Area Regional Police say around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday a man drove into the Notre Dame High School parking lot.

While there, officers report that he destroyed a "10 Commandments" monument and forcefully tried to get into the school.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police.

Remembering Pope Francis in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A prayer service to remember the late Pope Francis was held at King's College Wednesday night.

Many people attended the service to honor him with a mass of remembrance at the Chapel of Christ the King.

The event brought together prayers that were a big part of Pope Francis' life.

There were also moments of silence, along with the praying of the rosary.

PennDOT announces upgrade coming to Scranton bridge

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An infrastructure upgrade is coming to North Scranton. PennDOT plans to reconstruct the West Market Street Bridge over Leach Creek at Yard Avenue, a spot heavily damaged by flash flooding back in September 2023.

Starting in the spring of 2027, crews will replace the old stone arch and metal pipe with a modern precast box culvert, restore the streambed, and install a reinforced concrete wall along Leach Creek.

Homeland Security branch coming to Luzerne County

FORTY FORT, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A branch of Homeland Security is coming to Luzerne County. The Luzerne County Flood Protection Authority approved contracts for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), which is overseen by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to work out of its facility.

HSI is a department under ICE. This agency will soon occupy a vacant section of the facility.

The executive director tells 28/22 News the leasing deal has been a few years in the making, and it's one a county resident I spoke with feels unsure about.
