New fully accessible playground opens in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A new place to play is now in Scranton. The city celebrated the grand opening of the Butterfly Playground, a fully accessible space inside Nay Aug Park designed for children and adults of all abilities.

What used to be a parking lot is now a place where everyone can play.

"Oh, I've already seen the kids in here playing, and it makes you really happy. You put a smile on your face to see them enjoying it," said volunteer Doris Koloski.

Involved valedictorian helping those around her

YATESVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Growing up in the 21st century is not always easy, yet sometimes we find teenagers who excel both in and out of the classroom. One of them, a student who just graduated as class valedictorian, is leaving her mark in more than just her school work.

18-year-old Allison Jones has excelled in the gifted program during her time at Pittston Area High School. She can make solving a complex math problem look like child's play. You could say she has a knack for solving problems.

4 arrested after ICE raids local pallet shop

EXETER, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — On Monday, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced four people were arrested after executing a worksite enforcement operation in Exeter.

In a release, ICE explained Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Philadelphia and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Scranton on Thursday, June 5 partnered with FBI Scranton, IRS-Criminal Investigations Scranton, the US Marshals Service Scranton and other law enforcement groups to perform a worksite enforcement operation in Exeter at Wyoming Valley Pallets Incorporated.

More than 200 new Rite Aid locations listed for closure: court docs

(NEXSTAR) — More than 200 Rite Aid stores have been designated for closure as part of the retail pharmacy chain's bankruptcy process, court documents filed last week show.

Two separate filings outlined the fifth and sixth rounds of closures, impacting more than 230 Rite Aid locations across 14 states.

PA Turnpike tollbooths removed at interchanges

(WBRE/WYOU) — Multiple tollbooths have been removed from the Pennsylvania Turnpike in areas where Open Road Tolling (ORT) has begun.

The PA Turnpike has started removing toll plazas along the turnpike, starting with the Pocono Interchange (Exit 95) and on the Northeast Extension (Interstate 476), with plans to remove all tollbooths by 2028.

The two tollbooths have been removed where the ORT system has launched. The ORT system will have gantries above the turnpike that allow for unobstructed traffic flow. You will be able to drive highway speeds through the ORT gantries.

Police release details on Williamsport death investigation

WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Authorities in Lycoming County launched a death investigation Monday morning after a man was found dead in Williamsport.

The Williamsport Police Department on Monday said shortly after 10:45 a.m., they were called to the 1200 block of West 4th Street for a report of a deceased person.

Officers say they found a man dead inside an apartment and were later told the landlord found him after family members asked them to check on him.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A new ramen spot is now open in downtown Wilkes-Barre.

The authentic Japanese restaurant is open for business following its grand opening on Monday, June 9.

The restaurant already had a location in Tannersville open, now owner Eric Wahyudi is excited to open in the Diamond City.

"We are excited to bring diverse food to Wilkes-Barre."

Amazon announces $20B data center investment in Pa.

BERWICK, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Amazon has announced its plan to invest at least $20 billion in cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) facilities in Pennsylvania.

The first two locations to be identified for the development are Salem Township, Luzerne County, and Falls Township in Bucks County.
