Turning lemons into hope at lemonade stand in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Pittston woman is turning lemons into hope. Lily Struzzieri set up a lemonade stand inside the Marketplace at Steamtown. Her stand is part of a national effort with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation to raise money for childhood cancer research and awareness.

Struzzieri brought in around $250 and says she's just getting started.

She's serving up sweet drinks with an even sweeter goal: making a difference right here in her community.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There was an emotional farewell on Sunday in South Scranton at a longstanding house of worship. A church that has been part of the community for generations has held its final mass.

A triumphant sound filled the Nativity of Our Lord Church on Sunday afternoon, a house of worship that was founded in 1905.

Its roots stretch back even further to 1904, when construction began under Father James O'Reilly.

Wearing orange in remembrance of gun violence survivors

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local group is taking action against gun violence and asking others to do the same. Volunteers from Moms Demand Action came together at the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail in Scranton for a clean-up event.

It is all part of the nationwide wear orange campaign, a weekend of awareness honoring victims and survivors of gun violence.

The group says events like this show how better, safer neighborhood design, like clearing overgrown areas, well-lit streets, and removing trash, can actually help prevent crime.

Lackawanna County community reels after child killed in ATV crash

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Lackawanna County community is coping with tragedy on Saturday. They are mourning the death of a Spring Brook Township boy killed in an ATV crash.

Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland stated that a 14-year-old boy was killed in a fatal ATV accident shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Friday

The coroner stated that the juvenile was operating the ATV-type vehicle when he collided with terrain and was ejected from the vehicle.

While it is still unclear exactly how the crash occurred, the community is devastated.
