New Lackawanna County fund to crack down on blighted properties

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Cracking down on blighted properties: that's what's behind a new fund in Lackawanna County.

It will be funded by adding a new fee on certain property sales to help the initiative.

It was a unanimous vote by the commissioners Wednesday morning to start a new fund for blighted properties across the county.

A new initiative in Lackawanna County aims to transform neighborhoods plagued by decay just by adding a $250 fee to tax delinquent and foreclosure sales, the county creates a demolition and rehabilitation fund.

2,000 street signs to be replaced in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 2,000 street signs will be replaced in North Scranton, Green Ridge, East Scranton, and the plot section this year.

It's all part of the City of Scranton's expansive street sign project announced by Mayor Paige Cognetti.

New dog park approved, coming to Scranton

A high-contrast green background and white text, recommended by PennDOT, will be added to the signs.

Firefighters battle house fire in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A house is heavily damaged after a fire in Luzerne County late Wednesday afternoon.

According to Wilkes-Barre City Fire Chief Jay Delaney, multiple departments were dispatched for a fire that broke out around 3:15 p.m. in the 200 block of Conyngham Avenue near Jenks Lane in Wilkes-Barre.

Crews say the fire started in the back of the home and quickly spread.

Chief Delaney says no one was injured in the fire.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Child abuse is an alarming issue happening across our nation and one non-profit is working toward raising awareness about it happening in our area.

A pinwheel signifies childhood joy and playfulness but the blue one being held by Shannon Peduto represents child abuse prevention.

"Every year in Luzerne County, there are over 3,000 reports of child abuse happening in our community, so it’s very important that we keep our doors open so we are here to help these children and these families."

Paper plant alerts 100+ employees of closure

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The International Paper box plant near Hazleton will close on April 14.

The company warned the 107 employees about the February closure in accordance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN).

According to WARN, employers must give a 60-day notice when there are plant closings of over 50 employees or if there are other mass layoffs.

Search underway for missing 15-year-old

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police are searching for a 15-year-old reported missing from Scranton.

According to the Scranton Police Department, 15-year-old Riley Larnerd has been reported missing after she was last seen on February 15 in the 1500 block of Von Storch Avenue

Police describe Larnerd as 5'9;'', 120 lbs, with black hair and hazel eyes she was last seen wearing a gray zip-up coat and cow print pants.
