Skeletons rise from dead at Old Forge home for Halloween

OLD FORGE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 28/22 News has another Halloween house to highlight from Lackawanna County.

In a video sent to 28/22 News by Daniel in Nicole in Old Forge, the home looks like they have a spooky graveyard with skeletons and other creepy things rising from the dead.

There is even a section made to look like a shipwreck with pirate skeletons.

Travelers avoid delays in Pittston Township amid shutdown

PITTSTON TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — As we approach the ninth day of the government shutdown, many federal employees are dealing with furlough, backpay, and even layoffs. That includes some people working for agencies like the FAA and TSA.

28/22 News Reporter Avery Nape visited the Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport to find out how the shutdown is impacting travel for passengers.

While major airports like Denver and Chicago's O'Hare have reported disruptions and delays this week, passengers we spoke with coming from both airports say they've seen worse.

28/22 News visits transitional home for veterans

KUNKLETOWN, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 28/22 News is getting a first full look at an area resource for homeless veterans. Valor Clinic Foundation invited 28/22 News for a tour of what they call Paul's House on Wednesday.

It's a transitional home in Kunkletown designed to give veterans without a home a way to get help with mental health, access to food, and a chance to get back on their feet.

This comes before an open house this weekend that will give people a chance to see the living spaces there for themselves, after only ever being able to see the main common room.

Governor Shapiro announces $6M investment in Lackawanna County

MAYFIELD, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The property of an abandoned coal mine in Lackawanna County will soon be transformed into an economic opportunity. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced a $39 million investment into 11 sites across the commonwealth on Wednesday.

Six million dollars of the $39,000,000 will be used to build a brand-new manufacturing and logistics center in Mayfield.

PA voting system sends 31 voters duplicate ballots

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania voting systems are under the microscope again, this time for sending a group of voters duplicate mail-in ballots. 31 voters in Luzerne County received duplicate mail-in ballots ahead of this year's municipal election.

The ballots, coming from the commonwealth's statewide uniform registry of electors, also known as the Secretary of State's office, not the county's Bureau of Elections.

The database manages voter records in Pennsylvania's 67 counties.

Program allows students to help struggling classmate

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local university is bringing awareness to mental health and suicide prevention. Students attended the mental health fair to learn about the resources they can access should they need them.

"I know it's very hard for people our age, young adults, to come to find help, essentially, and we are connectors to mental health services," said Deana Nieves, a senior at Penn State Scranton.

Weather Alert: Freeze warnings in NEPA

(WBRE/WYOU) — The rest of the work week may start feeling like fall as frost advisories are in effect for parts of Pennsylvania.

Temperatures will fall into the lower and middle 30s in the Wilkes-Barre area.

For the rest of the area, it will be clear and colder with low temperatures between 35° and 40°. Some warmer valleys could stay in the 40s.

Thursday will be mostly sunny and cool and afternoon temperatures could be in the middle and upper 50s.

Lawmakers looking for solutions to keep vulnerable community safe

Second owner charged after daycare shutdown

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Court documents say a second person is being charged in connection with allegations of child abuse going unreported that closed a Lackawanna County daycare center.

Authorities say Erin Pallo, owner and director of Learn & Grow Early Childhood Day Care Center in Scranton, is being charged with failure to report child abuse. Officials add co-owner Amy Ware faces the same charge.
