SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An annual footrace traded in its stripes for plenty of purple. Hundreds of runners heard the sound of motors as they took off from Scranton's Nay Aug Park on Sunday.

Runners in the Show Your Stripes Hot Rod 5K and Walk were encouraged to wear stripes for the event that benefits the Ronald McDonald House of Scranton.

This year, organizers incorporated a "Purple" theme as a nod to McDonald's purple official mascot, Grimace.

Lackawanna County car show honors man who died of cancer

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local car show is steering support toward an animal shelter in need. More than 100 cars were displayed at the event near Clarks Summit. Hundreds of spectators showed up to see show cars and, of course, adorable pets from the shelter available for adoption.

Dozens of cars off the highway with their hoods up and their chrome shining. They took over a parking lot across the street from Griffin Pond Animal Shelter on Sunday for the Third Annual Mutts & Motors Car Show.

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania State Police announced a search in Luzerne County for a man accused of sexually assaulting a child has come to an end.

State police say Sweet Valley resident, 40-year-old Ryan McDermott, was arrested in Lake Township, Luzerne County.

Scranton mass gives people place to grieve suicide loss

Authorities explained they began the search for McDermott on Friday after discovering computer images of child sex acts from his home. They also recovered numerous explosive devices and guns.

OLYPHANT, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Lackawanna County man's legacy is alive and well on Sunday thanks to a car show turned tribute. Saint Cyril's Second Annual Car Show packed two lots with more than 100 classic and modern cars on Sunday.

The event on River Street in Olyphant served as a memorial for Gibby Carozzi, whose love of cars started the tradition.

The 71-year-old passed away in July after a short battle with cancer.

Scranton mass gives people place to grieve suicide loss

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Losing someone to suicide brings silence and pain for many families. A local mass held on Sunday is giving people a place to grieve and to heal.

At the Cathedral of Saint Peter, the mass for suicide healing and remembrance brought people together for the third year in a row.

The service offers prayer, comfort, and community for those who have lost loved ones to suicide.

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A supermarket in the Poconos is getting help from the community to help those fighting hunger. Shoprite of Stroudsburg held its Bag for Hunger Day on Saturday.

The event is part of its month-long Partners in Caring campaign. The hunger-fighting initiative supports more than 2,000 charities.
