Cold weather shelter sees uptick as temps drop

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It has been a mild November, but this week’s overnight temperatures are leaving those experiencing homelessness out in the cold with few shelters to turn to.

The front lights are always on at the Stroudsburg Wesleyan Church on North Fifth Street.

But during the colder months, its side door is also lit and a welcome sign is out, serving those in need as its cold-weather homeless shelter.

WYOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It's a big day for people looking for a better path in life. They graduated from Wyoming and Sullivan County Treatment Court on Thursday.

It's a program for people with alcohol or substance addictions who have been charged with non-violent crimes.

The participants attended weekly court sessions, random alcohol or substance testing, community service, and intensive cognitive behavioral treatment.

Residents briefed on Scranton stormwater project

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Some people in Scranton are frustrated with the delay in improving stormwater drainage in their city.

A public meeting was held Thursday for residents to learn more about the project.

The project will include relocating and installing new pipes in different neighborhoods.

Investments for the project are nearly $23,000,000 and about $6,300,000 in the American Rescue Plan Act.

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Scranton Beltway Project is stirring up concern in not one, but two counties.

On Wednesday, 28/22 News reported on how several residents in Luzerne County could lose their homes if the project takes place.

The same could happen to some in Lackawanna County, but that's not their only concern.

28/22 News Reporter Gianna Galli was at the second public hearing on Thursday.

The removal of homes, insertion of retention ponds, and addition of sound barriers are all on the list of worries.
