McDade Park hosts annual 9/11 memorial

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY — Another somber occasion was held in Scranton, this one at the 9/11 monument in McDade Park.

Scranton police and firefighters and even students from West Scranton High School were among those who attended.

The ceremony included hymns and the reading of names of Lackawanna County residents who died, as well as those who died fighting in the war on terror.

Monroe County homicide suspect shot 8 times in Utah

MIDDLE SMITHFIELD TWP., MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Monroe County homicide suspect remains hospitalized and in police custody, after he was shot at eight times outside a nightclub in Utah, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

State police say on August 10, around 12:55 a.m., the Salt Lake Police Department was called for a report of multiple gunshots fired outside of a nightclub in the area of Exchange Place and State Street in Salt Lake City, Utah.

New details emerge in Wilkes-Barre shooting

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 28/22 News is learning more about a deadly shooting in Downtown Wilkes-Barre on Monday afternoon.

Police charged 28-year-old Branden Delcastillo with homicide in the death of 35-year-old Lonnie Davis.

According to a criminal complaint, Delcastillo shot Davis, after Davis was arguing with a woman on Northampton Street. That woman was Delcastillo's mother, who Davis had a previous relationship with.

DALLAS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY — A resident of the Meadows Apartments in Dallas Township who suffers from dementia had over $1,500 stolen from her by a caretaker from an outside home-health agency, according to police.

A Philadelphia police officer has died from his wounds nearly three months after being shot in the neck after a traffic stop. City officials say 31-year-old Officer Jaime Roman leaves behind a wife, a 7-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son. Police say Roman had stopped the car in the city’s Kensington neighborhood on June 22 before the fleeing driver shot him. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel says murder charges are expected to be filed against the driver, 36-year-old Ramon Rodriguez Vazquez, who was previously charged with attempted murder and other counts.

Arrest made in Dunmore Elementary Center death investigation

DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An arrest has been made in a Dunmore death investigation after police say a man was found dead at the elementary school.

Dunmore Police Chief Salvatore Marchese tells 28/22 News that they, along with the Lackawanna County DA, are actively investigating a death at the Dunmore Elementary Center after a man died in the school on August 27.

Detectives announced they have arrested Christine Hessmiller, 39, of Dunmore, and charged her with involuntary manslaughter, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.

Man hospitalized after stabbing in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police are investigating a stabbing that sent a man to the hospital.

According to the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department, on September 9 around 10:00 p.m., officers were called to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital for a stabbing victim.

Carverton Road to close until October with new project

Police said the victim was "uncooperative" and said he was stabbed "somewhere in Wilkes-Barre."

The victim suffered a puncture wound to his left shoulder.

The investigation into the stabbing is ongoing.

LCCC holds rememberance event in observance of 9/11

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Wednesday marks the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and one local college is paying its respects through an annual remembrance event.

Silence falls over the Luzerne County Community College Wednesday as its annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony and brick dedication is held on campus.

Taking place at its walk of honor, the memorial site was inspired back in 2014 by a local family.
