Landmark Hazleton church to be demolished after fire

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A landmark church will have to be demolished after a weekend fire. That's the word on Wednesday from the Hazleton Fire Chief after Saturday night's fire on West Green Street.

Investigators determined someone intentionally started the flames on the third floor of the old Saint Paul's United Methodist Church.

Red Sand Project raising awareness on trafficking

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Red Sand Project raises awareness of exploitation and trafficking. Earlier Wednesday, the Children's Advocacy Center of NEPA and the NEPA Task Force Against Human Trafficking hosted the event in Scranton.

A crowd gathered around 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, with the red sand visible in the cracks of the sidewalk for all to see.

Wrapping up 28/22's Hunger Free Summer Campaign

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — We made it to the finish line for the 28/22 "Hunger Free Summer" campaign. For three years now, 28/22 has been helping area children and families in need.

This year, we partnered with Gerrity's the Fresh Grocer and Gerrity's Ace Hardware stores.

To finish up this year's event, 28/22 was in Hanover Township, and that's where 28/22 News Morning Anchor Tom Williams and Chris Bohinski were on Wednesday, collecting donations.

Missing Moosic man found dead in Luzerne County

(WBRE/WYOU) — Authorities reported that a man missing in Moosic was found dead in Luzerne County on Tuesday.

Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce and Lackawanna County District Attorney Brian Gallagher have released information regarding an investigation that began in Moosic and ended in Dupont.

On Saturday, July 26, the Moosic Borough Police Department began searching for 23-year-old Nicholas Terrery, who was last seen at his home.

Man sentenced for killing 26-year-old during armed robbery

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man has been sentenced after he was found guilty of killing a 26-year-old during an armed robbery.

65-year-old Shelton Miles was sentenced to life without parole for shooting and killing Jose Tatis Camilo.

Investigators reported that in March 2024, Camilo was shot in the back of the head during an armed robbery that Miles committed inside a Sunoco in Scranton.

PIKE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A lucky Pennsylvania lottery player in Pike County has won over $300,000 from an online game.

Pennsylvania Lottery awarded a prize worth $315,967.52 on the online game Deep $ea Quest.

$1M won off $20 lottery scratch-off ticket in Pa.

Deep $ea Quest is a connect-style game and one of three games contributing to the Cash Quest Jackpot, which starts at $50,000.

PA Lottery online games are played on a computer, tablet, or cellphone.

Man arrested on arson charges in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man was taken into custody after police say he intentionally set a fire.

According to the media release, police responded to reports of an intentionally set fire on New Street on Saturday, July 26.

Death investigation underway in Luzerne County

The fire was contained to the porch and entrance area of an apartment building and was put out by the Scranton Fire Department.

Police spoke to witnesses and identified 49-year-old Robert Jumper as having poured gasoline on the porch and intentionally set the fire.
