Mayor Cognetti claims victory on Scranton Democratic ticket

(WBRE/WYOU) — Mayor Paige Cognetti is claiming victory Tuesday night over challenger Bob Sheridan.

Cognetti is running on her administration's record highlighting financial stability, a stronger credit rating, and no tax increase for 2025.

Sheridan says it's time for new leadership pointing to concerns about crime, potholes, and blight.

Owners vow to rebuild after restaurant fire in Mountain Top

WRIGHT TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A busy family-owned restaurant was destroyed after a massive fire in Luzerne County.

Those 28/22 News spoke with say Adelina's Restaurant and Pizzeria was a popular spot for locals and somewhere people loved to work.

"It was shocking to wake up to. My husband and I have celebrated our last few anniversaries over at the restaurant. So this is heartbreaking," neighbor and customer Valerie Miller said.

Scranton Mayor Republican and Democrat nominees declared

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The numbers are in, and Mayor Paige Cognetti will take the democratic nomination for the general election this November. She received approximately 77% of the vote, while her challenger Bob Sheridan had 23%

Cognetti has been campaigning on her administration’s track record, pointing to consistent budget surpluses, no tax increase for 2025, and Scranton’s improved credit rating after exiting financially distressed status.

Bryan Kohberger defense team's alternate suspects list sealed

(NewsNation) — A judge sealed a motion filed by the defense team for Bryan Kohberger, who is accused of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022, which discusses “alternative perpetrators” they say might have committed the murders. 

Judge Steven Hippler pushed back, asking the defense team for more evidence to advance its theory beyond allegations during a May 15 hearing on the matter. 

“It seemed to be much of what you put in there,” Hippler said in court, “was potentially fairly objectionable in terms of admissibility.”
