Lackawanna College announces programs expansion

LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Big news from a local university: Lackawanna College in Scranton is expanding.

They announced that their new welding, carpentry, and electrical programs will soon be available in Bethlehem, Chambersburg, and Greensburg.

The courses focus on hands-on technical training in the skilled trades.

The move is still pending the US Department of Education approval.

Two hospitalized after propane tank explosion

SALEM TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There's an alert on Tuesday after a propane tank explosion on Monday afternoon injured two people. 28/22 News Reporter Joe Mason has an update on the explosion and how to properly store your propane tank.

The two people, a man and a woman, were sent to the hospital for burns and injuries.

That explosion happened at 184 Main Street in Salem Township.

According to the Salem Township Fire Department, a man hit a propane tank with the blades of his sit-on lawnmower. The call came in around 1:53 p.m. on Monday.

Scranton Fire Department adding boats to their arsenal

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Diving into action, the Scranton Fire Department is taking water rescue to the next level.

Tuesday morning at the Serrenti Center, the Scranton Fire Department showed off new water rescue capabilities that will be used in the field when needed.

"This is the culmination of a lot of hard work from a lot of different members of the department," Scranton Fire Chief and Management Coordinator Chief John Judge said.

It's a milestone years in the making for the Scranton Fire Department.

DA, PSP investigating Lackawanna County inmate death

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— According to a release from the Lackawanna District Attorney's Office, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and the District Attorney's Office are investigating the death of an inmate at Lackawanna County Prison on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials say that law enforcement was made aware of an inmate-on-inmate assault that happened at the prison around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Both PSP and the DA's Office responded to the scene after the assault resulted in one inmate dying.

The canonization of a Lackawanna County Saint

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A church in Lackawanna County celebrated the canonization of the first millennial saint Sunday.

That church is now among only one other in the country to be named after the 15-year-old saint.

People came from near and far to honor Saint Carlo's canonization in Lackawanna County.

PSP searching for suspect in chase, evading arrest

MILTON, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State Police have identified the suspect they say evaded arrest after a chase Tuesday morning in Northumberland County.

In a release, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) say at about 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, troopers tried to initiate a traffic stop on a white sedan with a fraudulent NJ registration on State Route 254 Westbound in Milton.

State Police identified the driver of the vehicle as Thomas Donfrancesco of Winfield.

PSP trying to find missing woman

(WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) are asking for the public's help in locating a missing woman from central Pennsylvania.

Troopers are trying to find Rebecca McNellis, 45, of Benner Township.

State Police say she was last seen on September 5 around 10:00 p.m. in the 700 Block West Market Street, Pottsville City, Schuylkill County.

McNellis is described as 5'6", about 260 pounds, with strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes.

Sept 9 marks 14th anniversary of 2011 flood

(WBRE/WYOU) — Tuesday, September 9, marks 14 years since residents saw rivers running down their roads.

According to reports from LuzerneCounty.org, the flooding, caused by Tropical Storm Lee, saw the Susquehanna River rise to a record 42.66 feet, surpassing the previous record held by Tropical Storm Agnes.
