Checking smoke alarms as clocks turn back

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Get ready to turn back your clocks this weekend! While you're thinking about the time change, experts say you should also be thinking about testing your smoke alarms.

Looking at your smoke alarm and making sure it works takes just a few minutes to do and it can make all the difference if a fire breaks out in your home.

"Press the button, you'll hear the loud sound that's meant to wake you up from your sleep. It's that simple," stated Chief Jay Delaney, Wilkes-Barre City Fire Department.

Brush fire safety tips

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Dry conditions and warm temperatures in NEPA are fueling brush fires across the region, including a large fire at Aylesworth Park Wednesday night that took crews five hours to contain.

The past few weeks of dry and warm weather have created the ideal conditions for wildfires According to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, on a scale from low to extreme, Lackawanna County is at high risk for brush fires

The DCNR also states that human activity is responsible for 98% of wildfires in Pennsylvania.

Man allegedly forces car off road causing crash, serious injuries

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is facing charges after police say he forced a car off the road, causing the driver to crash and sustain serious injuries.

In June 2024, officers were dispatched to a crash with serious injuries in the area of East Broad/ Exchange Streets in East Stroudsburg.

On the scene officers said a car struck a tree after the driver was run off of the road by a man driving a large white pickup truck.  The driver was taken to the hospital for her injuries.

Scranton man charged with indecent assault of child

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say they have charged and arrested a man for corruption of a minor.

According to the Scranton Police Department, on Wednesday, October 29, officers arrested 44-year-old Christopher Mercadante from Scranton.

Electric City Aquarium ordered to pay $66K to former employee

Police have charged Mercadante with the following:

Indecent Assault of a Child under 13

Two counts of corruption of a minor

Mercadante was arraigned and remains in the Lackawanna County Prison
