Non-profit helping survivors through art therapy

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Art therapy can be a valuable and therapeutic way to process and overcome different traumas. That's why a local non-profit offers art therapy classes to human trafficking survivors.

The founder of TWIGS Restoration Ministry takes her own story of survival to guide others through their healing journeys.

"I love doing art with different people just to see and prove to them that they can create art," Founder and CEO of TWIGS Restoration Ministry Sarah Issac-Samuel said.

Petition filed for court to change how County Commissioner replacement is chosen

LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Lackawanna County is now asking the court to change how Commissioner McGloin's replacement is chosen. A petition was filed on Monday by Commissioner Bill Gaughan and the county's attorneys.

It argues that Rule 1908, a supreme court ruling from 2019, should govern the process, not the home ruler chapter.

If granted, any registered Democrat in the county could apply for the seat, instead of going through the democratic party's nomination process.

Popular recreation spot turning into illegal dump site

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A popular spot for walking dogs and running is starting to look like a dump. Locals say illegal dumping is becoming a growing problem in the area.

Residents in the area of Robinson Circle in the Hanover Industrial Park in Luzerne County say it's a spot where many walk their dogs or enjoy time outside, but now it's plagued with garbage.

"I typically bring my three dogs over to Robinson Circle just to take them on like nightly walks," Jonathan Casey from Warrior Run explained.

Musical comedy ‘Nunsense’ fundraiser set to support Lackawanna College

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It’s the time of year for spring musicals and one professional production is set to support higher education in our area.

It’s a hidden gem tucked inside this Lackawanna College building on Vine Street.

The ‘People’s Security Bank Theater’ is one of the original vaudeville theaters in Scranton’s district.

“Scranton School District built Scranton Central High School around the theater and that building today, the high school merged with the theater is what we call Angeli Hall here on the campus of Lackawanna College.”

Man arrested after ATV and foot chase

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say they arrested a man after he fled from police on an ATV, then on foot.

Police say they attempted to pull over Anibal Diaz, 37, of Scranton for driving an unregistered ATV when he sped away.

Police call crash ‘aggravated assault by motor vehicle’

According to police, further down the road, they found the ATV flipped and later located Diaz walking away from the ATV carrying a helmet.

Police say they asked Diaz to stop, then he ran on foot. Diaz eventually stopped running and was placed into custody.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police responded to a crash Monday night that they are now labeling as an aggravated assault by motor vehicle.

Police say around 8:00 p.m. on March 17 they responded to a fight in progress on Barney Street. When police arrived, there were two victims who sustained injuries from being hit by a car.

Police respond to Wilkes-Barre crash

Police say there was a confrontation between the victims, ages 17 and 20, and the occupants of a white Ford.

Boil advisory in effect for part of Nanticoke

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania American Water has issued a boil advisory for customers in part of Nanticoke due to a main break that impacted a storage tank.
