Man identified after bank robbery in Luzerne County

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— One man has been arrested after a bank robbery Friday afternoon in Kingston.

According to Chief Richard Kotchik, of the Kingston Police Department, police were called to M&T Bank, 800 Wyoming Avenue, just after 2:30 p.m. for a reported bank robbery.

Kingston Police Department states that 30-year-old Kenneth Besecker, of Hunlock Creek, passed the teller a note saying they had a gun and demanded money.

Upon arrival officials determined that Besecker fled by foot with an unknown amount of money.

Former congressman finds new role to help Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Former congressman Matt Cartwright is taking on a new role to keep the wheels turning on a long-awaited project, restoring passenger rail service between Scranton and New York City.

Matt Cartwright was unanimously appointed by the Lackawanna County Commissioners to serve on the Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority Board through 2029.

Eight arrested for alleged Walmart theft

HAZLE TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police report that eight people were arrested after being accused of retail thefts at a Walmart in Luzerne County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, troopers responded to Walmart in Hazle Township for separate retail theft incidents throughout January.

On January 2 around 3:30 p.m., troopers were called to Walmart for a 55-year-old man from Hazleton who under-rang $115.39 worth of food items at the self-checkout. On the same day around 6:30 p.m., state police say a 36-year-old from Drums also under rang several items.

Former trooper accused of fatal shooting 'over a girl'

SUGARLOAF TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Details have been released on a homicide in Sugarloaf Township where police say a man killed another man over a girl.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on January 21 around 5:20 p.m., a man, later identified as John Rabbitz Jr. called 911 saying he was shot multiple times at his house on Merry L. Drive.

Rabbitz Jr. told 911 that someone knocked on his door, he answered and was immediately shot multiple times, including twice in the chest before the suspect ran away.

Ice jams in Susquehanna River cause growing concerns

KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The recent cold snap has led to large chunks of ice on the Susquehanna River, causing concern about ice jams for many residents in the Wyoming Valley.

At first glance, much of the ice on the Susquehanna River is at a standstill, but officials 28/22 News spoke with say this does not mean it is an ice jam, and that's good news for people living along the river.

Ice can be seen for miles along the Susquehanna River throughout the Wyoming Valley, much of it stuck in place.
