Power tool used to cut locks during burglary

PLYMOUTH TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania State Police in Wilkes-Barre are investigating a burglary that was reported Thursday morning.

Troopers say they received a call just before noon from an 81-year-old man from Hanover Township.

According to PSP, the burglar, or burglars, entered the building in the 2000 block of West Main Street through an upstairs window and used a power tool to cut through locked doors to gain access to the rooms downstairs.

Police issue reminder about Kia, Hyundai thefts

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pittston City Police Department is issuing a reminder to residents after an uptick in thefts of certain vehicles.

Police say they have seen an increase in thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles in the Greater Pittston and Wyoming areas.

Police say this is part of a nationwide trend that lets thieves start certain vehicles without having a key.

"Anyone who owns a Kia or Hyundai is encouraged to contact their dealer to inquire about security software upgrades that recently became available," police noted.

Teen could face charges, allegedly shot himself with stolen gun

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An 18-year-old could be facing charges after police say he shot himself and is not allowed to carry a weapon.

According to the Wilkes-Barre Police Department, officers were called to North Sherman Street for a shooting victim.

On the scene, officers said they found an 18-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Firefighters battle Jenkins Township compactor fire

JENKINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Crews were on the scene Tuesday night battling a fire that broke out in Jenkins Township.

Officials told 28/22 News firefighters from Laflin, Pittston City, and Pittston Township were called to the 200 block of Technology Drive in Jenkins Township Tuesday night at 10:20 p.m. for a reported compactor fire.

(WBRE/WYOU) — Investigators are searching for any relatives of a Luzerne County woman who died at a hospital in Lehigh County.

According to the Lehigh County Coroner's Office, 73-year-old Suzanne Facinelli from Hazleton died of natural causes at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Troopers say missing teen found with man at hotel

(WBRE/WYOU) — A man is facing kidnapping charges after police say he lied to them regarding the whereabouts of a 16-year-old girl who was staying with him at a hotel in Luzerne County.

State police say Hunter Michael McCaslin, 26, of Sugar Run, told troopers he did not know where the teen was when they interviewed him about her being reported missing.

According to police, the mother of the victim originally reported on November 18, 2024, that her 16-year-old daughter was involved in a relationship with McCaslin.

Woman allegedly strangled, violated by stranger

ASYLUM TWP., BRADFORD COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is facing charges after police say a woman was strangled and violated by a stranger.

According to state police, on December 29 around 5:00 p.m., troopers responded to an assault on Route 187 in Asylum Township.

Police say a woman reported that a stranger assaulted her but she was able to give a detailed description of the alleged attacker and his vehicle.
