Two arrested after multiple shots fired

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police arrested two men after they say their gunshot detector alerted them to multiple shots fired in Hazleton.

On March 7, around 2:40 p.m., officers said they received notification from the Flock/Raven system of multiple gunshots on 17th and Grant Streets.

While responding, police stated they saw a black BMW fleeing the area, and they tried to pull the car over. The driver tried to flee, leading to a chase with police, but they eventually stopped on 12th Street and Hanover Court.

Woman allegedly threatens worker, 'Do you want to taste my knife?', police say

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say they arrested a woman after she made threats with a knife against a man working in an apartment building.

According to the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department, on March 7 around 1:00 p.m., officers were called to South Main Street for a disorderly woman.

Man charged with 54 counts of child pornography

BUTLER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say a man has been charged with 54 counts of child pornography after investigating a cyber tip.

According to police, James Charles Vilcko, 58, was in possession of child pornography from November 24, 2024, to the present.

Suspect wanted after armed robbery at store

Court documents say Vilcko was unable to post bail on March 7 and he awaits a preliminary hearing.

Streets packed for Wilkes-Barre 45th Saint Patrick's Parade

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Northeastern Pennsylvania has wrapped up not one but two big Irish celebrations this weekend. Following the Electric City's Saint Patrick's Parade on Saturday was the Diamond City's Saint Patrick's Parade on Sunday.

It was quite a sight to see Sunday afternoon.

The streets surrounding Public Square were packed with thousands of people celebrating Irish pride.

The city of Wilkes-Barre's 45th Saint Patrick's Parade did not disappoint.

The sound of bagpipes blared along South Main Street in Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.

VFW fries up potato pancakes to support outreach programs

EXETER, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local VFW is frying up a community favorite on Sunday: crispy potato pancakes, all to support outreach programs.

VFW Post 6518 hosted its Third Annual Potato Pancake Sale on Sunday, welcoming both members and non-members to place orders over the phone or in person.

These golden, crispy pancakes, sold at $6 for four or $1.50 each, were provided by Yogis' Potato Pancakes.

Volunteers restoring wildlife habitat, cleaning up dumped tires

GLEN LYON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A group of volunteers in Luzerne County is restoring a local wildlife habitat by cleaning up illegally dumped tires.

About 30 volunteers gathered on Sunday at State Gamelands in Glen Lyon, tackling piles of old tires left behind an area that was once the scene of illegal dumping.

Backcountry hunters and anglers organized the event with help from the PA Game Commission.

The goal is to restore critical habitat for wildlife and outdoor recreation.

Multiple crews battle Luzerne County brush fire

LEHMAN TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Several acres of land are burned after a couple of brush fires in Luzerne County. One of them happened in the Back Mountain.

The Luzerne County Communications Center says crews were called to Golf Course Drive around 3:00 p.m. for a brush fire.

Six fire companies were working to contain the flames, and the Back Mountain Regional Fire Department was leading the response.

Police investigating report of shots fired

Another brush fire was reported in the Dorrance area.
