Man wanted in connection to Luzerne County stabbing

HANOVER TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Hanover Police are looking for a man they say stabbed someone on Friday in Luzerne County.

Police say Shawn William Shafer, 40, is wanted for aggravated assault in connection with the stabbing.

Police responded to a stabbing incident that occurred Friday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. at the McDonald's in the 700 block of the San Souci Parkway.

There is no word on the man's condition but they sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

U.S. Marshals capture Hazleton homicide suspect

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — A suspect wanted in connection with a Hazleton homicide was arrested by U.S. Marshals in York County on Friday.

According to U.S. Marshals, Jenndry Rodriguez-Contreras, 22, was wanted by the Hazleton Police Department on murder charges for a 2022 shooting that occurred in the South Fulton Court and East Noble Street area of Hazlton.

On Friday, February 9, at 6:00 a.m. U.S. Marshals found and arrested Rodriguez-Contreras at a home on Salem Avenue in York County.

Multiple Wilkes-Barre businesses victims of 'smash and grab' burglaries

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An investigation is underway after multiple businesses in the downtown Wilkes-Barre area were the targets of "smash and grab" burglaries, police say.

The Wilkes-Barre Police Department has initiated active investigations on "smash-and-grab" burglaries on seven businesses throughout the downtown area and three in a surrounding area.

The burglaries have been committed by smashing windows and making entry to the various locations to steal cash and other items, police stated.

Caught on Camera: Wilkes-Barre business exposes theft suspect on billboard

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It's not unusual for a person or business to post pictures of someone on social media after a theft or crime, but one Wilkes-Barre business is taking a different approach by using their digital billboard to get the word out about an employees bike that was stolen on Tuesday.

Axelrad Screen Printing, located on North Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre, has posted surveillance footage on the company's billboard of a suspect stealing a $2,000 bike just outside the shop that belongs to a company employee.

Six arrested for alleged retail theft at Walmart

HAZLE TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police report that six people were arrested after being accused of retail theft at a Walmart in Luzerne County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, troopers responded to Walmart in Hazle Township for separate retail theft incidents throughout the past three months.

On December 28 around 3:00 p.m., troopers said they were called to Walmart for a reported theft. Police say a 34-year-old man from Hazle Township left the store with $254 worth of unpaid items. He was later charged through the district court.

Joe Adams resigns as Pike and Wayne counties representative

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU)— Representative Joe Adams (R-Pike/Wayne) has resigned from his position as the representative for the 139th Legislative District of Pennsylvania.

Rep. Adams (R-139) submitted his letter of resignation to Honorary Joanna McClinton, speaker of the PA House of Representatives, officially leaving his position Friday.

Eryn Harvey, Luzerne County Director of Elections resigns

In January, Adams said he would not be seeking re-election.

Inmate convicted of assault, murder charge withdrawn due to case law

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced Friday that a federal inmate was convicted of assault with intent to commit murder and assault resulting in serious bodily injury after an initial murder charge was withdrawn due to the "year and a day rule."

Report: Luzerne County prison staff failed to follow protocol during escape

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Luzerne County Manager says prison staff failed in multiple areas during the wrongful release of Billy Partington.

Romilada Crocamo, the Luzerne County Manager said an internal investigation was conducted to determine how Billy Partington was released when Drake Partington was the one who posted bail.

"It was sloppy work…it was unacceptable. I don't know what other words to say but it won't be tolerated," stated Romilda Crocamo.

13-year-old reported missing in Schuylkill County

MAHANOY CITY, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A 13-year-old girl has been reported missing out of Schuylkill County.

According to the Mahanoy City Police Department, 13-year-old Jazmeen Johnson was last seen wearing a camo jumper, dark crocs, and a rainbow coat.

Eryn Harvey, Luzerne County Director of Elections resigns

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Eryn Harvey, the Luzerne County Director of Elections, has resigned.

Harvey's resignation was announced by Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo Friday morning.

The resignation, seen below, comes just two months before the Pennsylvania Primary Election.
