Woman sentanced to prison after 2022 death of baby

SULLIVAN COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Pennsylvania Attorney General announced the sentencing of a mid-wife who was previously found guilty of involuntary manslaughter of a newborn.

On Tuesday, Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry announced 49-year-old Brigitte Meckes was sentenced to eight to 17 years in prison.

This comes after a jury convicted her in July of aggravated assault, involuntary manslaughter, and other related charges in the 2022 death of a baby.

Dunmore Fire Department facing critical staffing shortages

DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local fire department is facing critical staffing shortages, causing concerns for public safety from other fire departments.

According to a recent Facebook post by the Scranton Firefighters IAFF Local 60 Union, the Dunmore Fire Department is currently operating with three fewer firefighters than needed.

This shortage is forcing the department to "brown out" its ladder service on days when they don't have enough staff.

This means the Scranton Fire Department is automatically dispatched to cover emergency calls in Dunmore.

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity helps Hurricane victims

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is contributing to the hurricane relief efforts.

The executive director of Habitat International says they are working to assess the damage in the communities impacted by the hurricanes to know where to focus their teams in order to support the recovery process.

Three charged after drug raid in Pike County

MATAMORAS, PIKE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — After a months-long investigation into alleged drug trafficking at a home in Pike County, police say they have arrested three people.

According to the Pike County District Attorney's Office, on October 16, the following three people were arrested after a search warrant was served at a home on Tenth Street in Matamoras;

John Cavalone, 39, of Matamoras

Luke Cavalone, 42, of Matamoras,

Tammy Holmes, 49, of Matamoras

17 arrested after Luzerne County drug investigation

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Over a dozen people have been arrested during a drug investigation in Luzerne County Thursday.

Beginning Thursday morning, and into the afternoon, a flow of people were coming in and out of Kingston police headquarters in handcuffs.
