PA's oldest historical society purchases church

EXETER, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— The Luzerne County Historical Society will have a new place to preserve and teach about the area's rich history.

The society purchased Saint Cecilia Church on Wyoming Avenue in Exeter which closed in 2022.

Once renovations are completed, it will serve as a unique resource for the county holding historic county artifacts and museum exhibits.

Society officials say this is just an expansion of the organization and will still continue to operate at their current Wilkes-Barre locations.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— An area along the west bank of the Susquehanna River is now free from a buildup of trash.

Crews from Wilkes-Barre and Edwardsville teamed-up today to clean up the dump site at Nesbit Park.

Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown says the wooded area was home to a homeless encampment that was cleared in late march.

Dump trucks and bulldozers cleared the site piled high with trash.

Empty bowls being put to use for a good cause

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Empty bowls in Monroe County are helping to fully stock food pantry shelves.

Dozens are gearing up to roll up there sleeves to participate in Saturday's empty bowls event at East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church.

It is part of an international event that allows local artisans to band together with their communities to fight hunger.

All of the money raised from Saturday's event will be donated to the food pantry and soup kitchen at the church.

FBI search for Pa. fugitive wanted for murder

(WBRE/WYOU) — The FBI is searching for a man wanted after he allegedly killed his wife in Philadelphia.

The search is underway for 34-year-old Miguel Angel Aguilar Ojeda after he allegedly killed his wife on October 27, 2024, in Philadelphia

On October 30, an arrest warrant was issued for Ojeda after he was charged with the following;

Murder

Possessing instruments of crime

Abuse of corpse

Tampering with evidence 

Former borough administrator accused of adding 1,200 of sick time

Hazleton Area enhance security measures for safety

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Hazleton Area School District, the largest school district in Northeastern Pennsylvania, is making major upgrades to its school safety system.

Those upgrades include "hi-tech" sensors that can detect smoke from gunshots and pick up keywords such as "emergency" or "help".

Police block off home, road in Luzerne County

The security upgrades also include a special window film that hardens windows from intruders, gunfire, and severe storms.

New mobile metal detectors will also be installed.

Military unit from New Jersey called in to investigate explosives

LUZERNE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police blocked off a home and roadways in Luzerne Borough Friday afternoon as they investigate explosives found in a home.

Around 1:40 p.m., police blocked off a home in the 300 block of Bennett Street between Sly and Academy Street.

Investigators say they were awaiting local bomb squad personnel to check out the home in question, but the Scranton Bomb Squad said the amounts of items found in the home is too much for their unit to handle.
