Laurel Run Bridge set to reopen in Bear Creek Township

BEAR CREEK TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Laurel Run Bridge is set to reopen after nearly nine months of being closed.

The closure was part of a $15,700,000 bridge replacement project on the PA Turnpike's Northeast Extension.

Line striping, paving, and guide rail installation had been completed by last Friday.

Detours around the closure in Bear Creek Township totaled 14 miles and added over 20 minutes to driver's commutes.

COLTS prepare to hold annual Stuff the Bus campaign

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The County of Lackawanna Transit System (COLTS) is preparing to hold its annual Stuff the Bus campaign in Lackawanna County.

In the last 15 years, the county's transit authority has collected just under $50,000 and over 13,000 toys for the Toys for Tots Foundation.

COLTS says they are looking for any new unwrapped toys or monetary donations.

Senate ballot recount begins in Lackawanna County

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Lackawanna County began its recount of ballots in the closely contested senate race between Bob Casey and David McCormick Tuesday.

All counties across Pennsylvania are required to start their recount by Wednesday.

The recount was automatically triggered due to the narrow margin between incumbent Democrat Bob Casey and Republican David McCormick.

Pike County guard sentenced for bringing drugs into jail

MILFORD, PIKE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A former Pike County jail guard has been sentenced after bringing drugs into the correctional facility.

In December of 2023, 28/22 News reported that 40-year-old Michael T. Spensieri from Blooming Grove Township was arrested after being accused of a scheme to bring drugs into the prison.

According to the press release, Spensieri brought a controlled substance, buprenorphine commonly known as suboxone, to the Pike County Correctional Facility.
