Man charged with homicide in Northumberland County

WEST CHILLISQUAQUE TOWNSHIP, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One man is being charged with homicide after an alleged stabbing in Northumberland County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), on Friday, February 23, troopers received a call from Northumberland County 911 regarding a 28-year-old stabbing victim.

Troopers say the victim, identified as Kyle Christensen had been stabbed multiple times in the torso.

PSP says they identified the man who stabbed Christensen as 22-year-old Preston Bennett.

Scranton announces opening of grants through ARPA fund

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — On Thursday, the city of Scranton announced another opening of grants through the ARPA fund.

A total of $500,000 will be available to local artists and art organizations, each one receiving up to $45,000.

Through economic reports and data, local art communities such as music groups, independent writers, and theater and dance companies are still facing economic and employment impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, and this new grant through ARPA is aimed at helping them rebuild.

The force will be led by Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt, the state's top election official.

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — According to the World Health Organization, anxiety disorders rank as the most prevalent mental health disorder globally, affecting four percent of the population.

The National Eating Disorders Association reports that nine percent of Americans will struggle with an eating disorder in their lifetime and only a quarter of those affected receive treatment.

This is a reason why Maryland University's Psychological Services held a free screening day for those disorders.

PD: Man exposes himself to woman in Scranton parking lot

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is being charged after police say he inappropriately exposed himself in a Scranton parking lot.

According to the Scranton Police Department, officers responded to a 911 caller who witnessed a man acting in a lewd manner.

The victim told police when entered her car, a man, later identified as Jarrett Edmonds, 43, turned toward her while he was pleasuring himself, as stated in court documents.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Investigators announced that decomposed remains were discovered in the basement of a Wilkes-Barre home.

Police Chief Joseph Coffay, Luzerne County Coroner Jillian Matthews, and District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce released information Thursday afternoon regarding the Carlisle Street investigation which has been ongoing in the Diamond City this week.

UGI announced decrease in gas bills in March

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — United Gas Improvement Corporation (UGI) has announced another decrease in gas bills in March.

According to UGI, the cost of their gas rates will go down three percent starting March 1, lowering average bills from $93.96 per month to $91.04 per month.

“This rate decrease follows a significant drop in December and is benefiting our customers during the winter heating season. Natural gas continues to be a safe, reliable, low carbon and increasingly more affordable energy choice,” said Paul Szykman, Chief Regulatory Officer.
