D.A. Powell weighs in on ghost guns

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The man suspected of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson is said to have used a ghost gun during the alleged crime.

Ghost guns are firearms assembled from parts often sold in kits online or at gun shows.

"A ghost gun is a homemade gun, it's either sold in a kit that looks like a disassembled gun that can be easily assembled with a couple of screws and functions like a gun, or it can be manufactured or made with a 3D printer," said Lackawanna County District Attorney Mark Powell.

Steady rain will give way to cold air and snow

(WBRE/WYOU) — After dealing with drought conditions across northeastern and central Pennsylvania over the past few months, beneficial rainfall is here this week.

Wednesday, a general 1-2" of rain is expected with locally higher amounts. Temperatures during the day will be in the 50s.

As colder air filters in on the backside of the storm, some snow will start to mix in or change over during the evening.

Little to no snow accumulation is expected. However, some of the highest elevations will have the chance to see minor accumulations.

Authorities warn of rental listing scam

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — No doubt you've heard the phrase "buyer beware." Law enforcement officials are now adding the phrase "renters beware."

A rental listing scam is sweeping the area and it comes at a time when there is a shortage of good rental properties.

"There's no supply of rentals out there. There's a shortage of people are looking for good houses and it's not available," said Tom Leighton C.A. Leighton Realty Company.

(The Hill) -- Police said Luigi Mangione, 26, a person of interest in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last week, was arrested Monday with a ghost gun in his possession. Mangione was taken into custody in Altoona, Pa., earlier Monday.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Altoona police arrested Mangione on firearm charges, after receiving a tip. She said he is believed to be “our person of interest” in Thompson's shooting.

"Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news," Delegate Nino Mangione, the suspect's cousin, said in the statement.

The suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO struggled with deputies and shouted while arriving for a court appearance in Pennsylvania a day after he was arrested at a McDonald’s and charged with murder. Luigi Nicholas Mangione emerged from a patrol car, spun toward reporters and shouted something partly unintelligible while deputies pushed him inside Tuesday. At the brief hearing, the defense lawyer informed the court that Mangione would not waive extradition to New York but instead wants a hearing on the issue. Mangione was denied bail.
