Tamaqua student wins Christmas Card Contest

TAMAQUA, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Many of us who send Christmas cards look for just the right artwork and an equally good verse. Some local parochial school students were asked to have a hand in making such a card.

In this week's Here's to You Kid, 28/22 News Reporter Mark Hiller introduces us to some students now gaining notoriety thanks to their creativity.

Charles DeFrancisco is familiar with the verse he is reading from a religious Christmas card for sale. After all, the Marian Catholic High School Senior wrote it.

Water main breaks at Wilkes-Barre Public Square

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Wilkes-Barre's Public Square was ponded with water on Monday after a suspected water main break flooded a busy intersection.

On Monday shortly after 4:30 p.m., the City of Wilkes-Barre warned residents to avoid the Public Square in Wilkes-Barre after a reported water main break.

28/22 News is on the scene as water gushed out onto the street near the intersection of Public Square and West Market Street.

NEW YORK (WPIX) – A man arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been identified as Luigi Mangione, officials said Monday.

Mangione, 26, was taken into custody in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Monday. He was arrested by the Altoona Police Department after a McDonald’s employee recognized him, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference.

The 26-year-old has since been charged with murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police.

Wilkes-Barre Fire Department unveils new engine

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Wilkes-Barre Fire Department showed off its newest set of wheels Monday.

The department's new 2024 Pierce Enforcer Pumper was delivered to the fire headquarters on East Ross Street.

Man allegedly flees from police during standoff in Monroe County

TOBYHANNA, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say a man was arrested after he started a standoff with officers and fled from the window of a home.

According to the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department, on Monday, December 9 around 1:00 a.m. officers were called for a welfare check at Vista Drive in Tobyhanna.

Officers said they were told a domestic dispute was happening inside a home where 21-year-old Donti Jackson had pointed a gun at family members. The family was able to safely exit the house after Jackson threatened to not let anyone leave, police stated.

Jack Frost opens to skiers, snowboarders

KIDDER TOWNSHIP, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The start of December was a cold and snowy one with Mother Nature helping some ski resorts open up early.

Snow packed down on the ground early Monday at Jack Frost Ski Resort in Carbon County, a telltale sign that the season is finally here.

“The team was prepared, they were ready. They had all their equipment and everything ready to go so when that cold snap did come, we’re able to fire the guns up,” said Tony Santora, general manager, of Jack Frost/Big Boulder.

Driver killed after car crashes into tree

CRAWFORD TWP., CLINTON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police report a man has died after his car veered off a roadway and crashed into a tree.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on December 5 around 5:30 a.m., a crash happened on State Route 880 on Rauchtown Raod in Crawford Township, Clinton County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on Friday, December 6 around 8:00 p.m. a car crashed on Interstate 81 in Foster Township, Schuylkill County.

8-year-old killed in Hanover Twp. shooting

HANOVER TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police are currently investigating a deadly shooting early Monday in Hanover Township that killed an 8-year-old.

The Hanover Township Police Department stated they are investigating what led to the deadly shooting of an eight-year-old girl on Fellows Avenue.

Police say the shooting occurred around 3:00 a.m., December 9 in the 500 block of Fellows Avenue in Hanover Township.
