Waiting out power outages in Lackawanna County

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It is a rough start to the weekend for tens of thousands of homes and businesses in northeastern Pennsylvania.

They began the day without power after a winter storm unleashed its fury Thursday into Friday.

One of those areas experiencing numerous outages is Lackawanna County.

Forrest James was still shoveling snow Saturday afternoon from what Mother Nature just delivered to northeastern Pennsylvania.

Free community Thanksgiving dinner in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The season of giving is also alive at a local school, where staff and students are hard at work preparing for a big community Thanksgiving dinner.

It is all hands on deck for volunteers at West Scranton Intermediate School.

They are preparing holiday meals for more than 200 people on Sunday to either sit down and eat in the cafeteria or take their meal home.

Parade spreads holiday cheer in the Diamond City

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Elsewhere, the Wilkes-Barre Christmas parade is helping make this season bright.

A good-sized crowd gathered this afternoon on downtown streets and Public Square to take in all that the annual parade has to offer.

Numerous floats, marchers, and music helped fill the seasonal spectacle.

Some parade-goers get so into it, that they even dress up like they were in the parade themselves like a Plymouth woman did.

Three people displaced after Luzerne County fire

HUGHESTOWN, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Three people have been displaced after a Saturday morning fire in Luzerne County.

According to Chief Jeff Balut of the Hughestown Police Department, a call came in around 1:00 p.m. for a reported structure on the unit block of Reynolds Street.

Officials say the fire started in an upstairs bedroom of the home on Reynolds Street.

Winter storm causes power outages across northeastern Pennsylvania

Crews were quickly able to contain the fire to the upstairs of the home.

Loans available for Union County nonprofits Impacted by Tropical Storm Debby

LEWISBURG — Certain private nonprofit (PNP) organizations in Union County may be eligible to apply for low-interest disaster loans to cover damages caused by Tropical Storm Debby on Aug. 9-10.The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced PNP organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other business assets. The interest rate is 3.25 percent with terms up to 30 years.
