JENKINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Turkey, pie, and mashed potatoes are part of many Thanksgiving plans, but there is one thing experts say can certainly be hard to swallow.

Politics can be a tricky topic to navigate, especially after such a contentious election.

Melanie Priebe, certified Psychiatric physician's assistant is preparing for Thanksgiving. Her family has gathered here often to celebrate the holidays and the topic of politics has come up plenty of times.

Luzerne County residents cope with power losses after snow storm

BEAR CREEK TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It was a long three days and counting for thousands of people who lost their electricity during a late-week winter storm.

On Sunday, PPL said it's still working to restore power in parts of northeastern Pennsylvania, including Luzerne County.

RJ Popeck powered up a chainsaw on Sunday to cut through damaged trees in Forest Park Development in Bear Creek Township.

"Old trees, they break," Popeck said.

Police investigate crash near Home Depot in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police were on the scene of a crash that left a busy road closed in Wilkes-Barre.

Police were called Sunday to the area of Spring Street and Route 309 near the Home Depot.

PennDOT says Route 2009, also known as Jubilee Road in Covington Township, is closed due to damage of the overhead railroad bridge.

On Sunday, Mayor George Brown announced the City of Wilkes-Barre will suspend parking meter fees for the holiday season in the downtown Wilkes-Barre business district.

Winter train displays now open through January

From 8:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25 to Monday, January 6, 2025, the fee suspension will be in effect, officials say.

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local holiday season tradition is back on track. The Hudson Model Railroad Club opened its doors for the winter last weekend.

Visitors are invited to come explore their intricate model train displays.

The club was founded in 1980 and is located above the Polish American club.

The 30 members of the club spend the year crafting and updating their layouts, offering a unique way for families to experience creativity and history together.

Coffee Inclusive in Pittston welcomed back the Sensitive Santa program on Sunday for a second straight year.

Sensitive Santa is an adapted Santa visit for children and families with special needs.

More than 100 children attended the event.

A crowd gathered Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park for the 11th Annual Warrior Christmas Tree Lighting.

The tree honors those who have served and are missed at home by family and friends.

The various colored stars on the tree represent veterans' reserves, those wounded in action, active duty in combat and deployed, those killed in action, and POWs and MIAs.

The Second Annual District Attorney's Veterans Brunch featured a continental brunch, keynote speakers, and prayer.
