New basketball court opens in Dupont

DUPONT, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A new blacktop basketball court and walking trail is now open in Dupont.

The community turned out on Saturday for the ribbon-cutting, celebrating the new court and trail on Hemlock and Walnut streets.

The first phase cost about $160,000 and was all funded by grants and help from state legislators.

The old court was considered deplorable, and the Dupont Council President says a walking trail was needed since people were starting to walk the streets.

He also hopes the upgrades send a message.

Sound of Jazz fills Electric City for Scranton Jazz Festival

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The smooth sound of jazz is filling the Electric City this weekend for the 20th annual Scranton Jazz Festival. More than 80 musicians are performing in 20 different downtown locations, including Scranton Art Haus.

A crowd gathered Saturday night to hear Jack Mead Junior West Third Street Blues Band play their set.

Other festival performers set up at places like Backyard Ale House and the Scranton Cultural Center.

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Some people are shopping this weekend for a cause in Stroudsburg. Shoppers turned out on Saturday for the Seventh Annual Just Care Back Benefit Bash Fundraiser on Saint Andrews Lane.

Crowds browsed and bought everything from clothing and jewelry to household supplies.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local event wrapped up on Saturday to raise money for abused and neglected children. NEPA's Summer In The City celebrated its Second Annual Day Downtown in Wilkes-Barre.

The fundraising festival started Saturday morning and continued until 8:00 p.m. It featured something for everyone.

Food trucks, small businesses, and carnival games brought plenty of people to Public Square on Saturday for NEPA's Day Downtown.

Police searching for Weis burglar

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police need help to track down an alleged thief at Weis Market.

Surveillance video caught a suspect who broke into Weis Market on North River Street.

Police say the burglar smashed a front window and made their way into the store Saturday shortly after 4:00 a.m.

Police investigating after man was shot twice

The intruder filled up a bag with candy and may have taken other items.

Search on hold for missing fisherman in Susquehanna River

BRIAR CREEK TOWNSHIP, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A search is on hold Saturday night along the Susquehanna River after a fisherman disappeared into the water.

Rescue crews rushed to the Berwick-Nescopeck Bridge just before 5:00 p.m. Saturday. Police say a man was fishing when he fell into the river and never resurfaced.
