Luzerne County police help arrest man wanted in North Carolina

KINGSTON TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police in Luzerne County say they helped arrest a man wanted for attempting to rape a child and other charges in North Carolina.

According to the Kington Township Police Department, on April 29 multiple agencies conducted a joint investigation into the solicitation of a child by computer.

As a result of the investigation, 30-year-old Bobby Craven Brown was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center in North Carolina.

PSP continues to search for alleged stabbing suspect

FREELAND BOROUGH, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) announced on Tuesday that troopers continue to search for an alleged stabbing victim.

According to PSP Troop N-Hazleton, on September 17, 2021, troopers responded around 11:43 p.m. to a disturbance in the 300 block of Washington Street in Freeland, Luzerne County.

Upon arrival, state police say they found one victim with a stab wound to the torso.

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski announced that state funding has been awarded by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) to area schools to improve safety and support mental health programs for both students and staff.

Hazleton man charged with fleeing, filing false report

HAZLETON CITY, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Hazleton City Police Department announced Tuesday that a man was charged with fleeing and eluding police after leading officers on a chase with a dirt bike.

According to police on Monday, April 29, at 7:59 p.m. officers saw a blue dirt bike driving on Locust Street and attempted to stop the bike, but the driver fled the wrong way onto 5th Street at a high rate of speed, almost hitting several other vehicles.

Man arrested for alleged stabbing over tool dispute

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man was stabbed in the chest after a dispute over stolen tools occurred, police stated.

According to the Nanticoke Police Department, on April 9 around 10:50 p.m., officers were called for a stabbing in the 200 block of Christian Street. Once police arrived on the scene 20 minutes later, the victim was taken to the hospital for two wounds, one in the chest and another in his hand.

Police said they learned the victim and another man, identified as Nathaniel Moore, 38, of Nanticoke, got into an argument over tools.

Five charged in connection to festival fights at Kirby Park

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A total of five people are charged after police say a fight broke out at Kirby Park Cherry Blossom Festival, involving three teenagers.

On April 28 around 9:00 p.m., Wilkes-Barre City Police reported officers were called to Harkins Lane for a home invasion.

Once on the scene, officers said the victim claimed two people, Dionte Taylor, 29, and Kiara Wynn, 22, both of Wilkes-Barre, came onto her property and began yelling at her to "come outside."

Motorcyclist accused of giving middle finger to police during chase

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A motorcyclist with a fake license plate that said "will run" was arrested after giving police the middle finger during a chase, investigators stated.

According to the Wilkes-Barre Police Department, on April 19 around 10:30 a.m., officers patrolling North Wilkes-Barre Boulevard saw a motorcyclist with a fake license plate that said "will run" and began to follow the operator, later identified as Jayden Cortes, 19, of Wilkes-Barre.

Police release details of deadly Scranton shooting

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — We now know more about what police say led to a man killing his brother in South Scranton.

24-year-old Carlos Rivera is being charged with first-degree and four counts of third-degree murder after the shooting death of his brother, 35-year-old Walter Reyes.

According to police, the brothers were drinking with two women in the brothers' shared apartment on Pittston Avenue when they started arguing around 2:00 a.m. Monday.

LCCC offering trade and tech classes in Hazleton

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — As the need for those skilled in specific trades continues to increase, one local college is expanding to educate more students.

28/22 News Reporter Emily Allegrucci spoke with the president of the college today about what they're doing to prepare students for the future.

Luzerne County Community College (LCCC) is making a change at its Hazleton Center.

With the addition of a new technology lab and welcoming trades and technology programs, the college is hoping to help Hazleton expand in multiple different ways.

Making Pittston more walkable

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — "Go take a walk:" That's the word in the city of Pittston. The city has seen a rebirth over the last decade, and now, they want to make the area more walking-friendly.

"The whole walkable thing, you know, we started about a year and a half ago," said Pittston Mayor Michael Lombardo.

The Mayor said Monday the city is in a data collection phase, assembled a committee and taking input from the public on how to make the city more walkable.
