Local bar hosts benefit for non-profit animal refuge

PRINGLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A local animal shelter is getting a boost thanks to a longtime partnership with a Luzerne County bar.

Blue Chip Farms held one of its most important fundraisers of the year at Keeley's Alehouse and Grille in Pringle.

It is the ninth year for the event that's held each June.

They had basket raffles, t-shirts for kids and adults, and a 50/50.

The bar is also donating 20% of food sales back to the shelter.

Volunteers say the fundraiser will bring in around $2,000.

Water main break affecting multiple communities

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A water main break is affecting multiple communities in Luzerne County Wednesday night.

According to Pennsylvania American Water, crews arrived on-scene to a water main break affecting Hanover Township, Ashley, and Wilkes-Barre at around 8:00 p.m.

Repairs are expected to take until 6:00 a.m.

Residents in the affected area may experience discolored or cloudy water, low water pressure, or no water, according to Pennsylvania American Water.

Neighbors say the road has had issues in the past with heavy trucks going down the street, but they say the truck was parked due to a construction project going on in the area.

Horton Street is closed for the time being.

This year's event kicked off at Gerrity's in Clarks Summit.

And that's where 28/22 News evening anchor Nick Toma has been collecting donations for most of the day.

Nonprofit groups like United Neighborhood Centers benefit from these donations by being able to feed under privileged kids, according to Sumida Samad.

'Can't get that image out of my head', 2001 murders still haunt community

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One of Northeastern Pennsylvania's most notorious killers has died.

Henry Stubbs was convicted of the brutal murders of a mother and her 6-year-old daughter in Luzerne County in 2001.

Prosecutors had sought the death penalty for Stubbs, but he was eventually sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison.

State Prison officials are investigating Stubb's death.

He was convicted in the brutal murders of a young mother and her six year old daughter in Wilkes-Barre in 2001.

Two allegedly chased by knife wielding woman

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say a woman was arrested after she allegedly chased and tried to stab two women with a knife.

According to the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department, on June 24, around 12:50 a.m., officers were called to Scott Street for a report of a woman attempting to stab several people.

$5,000 worth of horse equipment stolen during break in

Once on the scene, officers said the victims, ages 21 and 19, claimed that the suspect was chasing them around the residence while armed with two knives.

DALLAS, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man has been charged with child pornography after police say an investigation began after responding to a cyber tip.

According to police, 22-year-old Daniel Dudick of Dallas had child porn on his phone when police responded to a cybertip on June 24 at Dudick's residence.

Officers say Dudick used a social media platform to share, trade images and videos of child sexual abuse materials, along with having them downloaded on his phone.

DUI checkpoints set in Pennsylvania

(WBRE/WYOU) — State police announced DUI checkpoints will be placed across various roadways in Pennsylvania during the July 4th weekend.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols aim to deter drinking and driving. Police say they are operating with a “zero-tolerance enforcement policy.”

Police say checkpoints will be placed on roadways from Thursday, July 3, through Sunday, July 6, that are experiencing high rates of DUI-related traffic violations and DUI-related crashes.
